Hi guys after much deliberation in choice, I have chosen the Sony e series 17". I was advised in another thread here to check it out direct from Sony. I have found the laptop for £710 (inc. VAT + delivery) from a private company but from Sony it's £1,066 (inc. VAT + delivery) obviously with a few extra perks:

i5 520M vs i5 430M (in favour from Sony)
blu-ray writer vs blu-ray player (in favour from Sony)
500GB 7200rpm vs. 500GB 5400rpm (in favour from Sony)
1600x900 max res. vs 1920x1080 max res. (in favour of the private company)

is the i5 520M really a big difference from the 430M and will the 7200rpm vs. 5400rpm really affect much??

Before Sony screwed me and extended it I had 1 day to go before I missed out on a free Blu-Ray writer, however the 520M what I wanted wasn't in stock, so I also had the 430M dilemma, after reading around the net I found that the difference is not much at all really so I took the plunge.

As for 5,400RPM drive I can't comment on that cause I aint received my laptop yet :(, if it's slow to a point where it ****es me off though I will put a SSD in there so we will see.

Edit: price jump from Sony seems quite high for the difference, whats the GFX card in both?

both have a 1GB ATI HD 5650

hey guys just on the same topic still, is a 520M and 7200rpm HDD worth £71 more on a unknown laptop make (PC Specialist to be specific) over the 430M and 5400rpm HDD from Sony??

This is what I got from Sony.

that sounds alright but as you mentioned im getting the 17.3" one and it has a bigger HDD (500GB) and a blu-ray drive. Granted you have the 520M @ 2.40GHz but will this make much of a difference over a 430M @ 2.26GHz. And I get all this for £710 inc. VAT and delivery :p

What I found a real shame with those Sony's is the poor battery life. With a i5 and switchable graphics, they could fit in a half decent battery and make the thing more attractive.

yh totally agree with you there mate, but having said that I will have the laptop mainly plugged in to an outlet. And design may not be the best out there, but I kinda like it :D
