Im really surprised, i did a search and it seems no one on this forum has mentioned this phone.

Its basically a newer version of the W800i (without the horrible white/cream orange combo) cant see many new features at first look, but it looks really nice.

No set release, but i heard about March 06. Prob what i will look at getting, been holding off my upgrade since Sept 05

I think the lack of a joystick (yay!) would finally make the phone adequately reliable. That said, it does just look like Sony Ericsson thought "Can't be bothered to develop a new phone, what can we do?" and came up with this model...

Does it have anything else new, other than a redesign of the buttons/exterior?

yeah i know what you mean, i reckon the removal of joystick was due to the fact that a lot of people didnt like it, and those that did were still faced with them breaking.

When i worked for O2 some people just didnt buy SE's due to the joysticks.

Not sure about features, havent looked into it much, but it doesnt look to be anything much different to the W800i other than the obvious visual changes.

The only real differences apart from the D-pad, is the W810i is quad-band GSM and has EDGE (pretty usless in the UK).

As a W800i owner (and only a few months into my contract) the W810i isn't really of interest.
I personally like the cream/orange colour of the W800i - if I didn't I'd have bought a K750i.
So apart from the colour, removal of joystick (which again I'm more than used to now) and probably a software build that has removed the majority of the bugs that were in the W800i at release the phone doesn't really offer much else.

What will of course happen is the W800i will drop in price and sit where the K750i sits at the moment and the W810i will come in as the new premium unit.

I reckon this is designed for those people who didnt get the w800i though, possibly because of the cream/orange.

For me, who is looking for a new phone right now it offers everything i could want, but as you said, for W800i/K750i owners its nothing new.

They really need a new approach i think

This phone has been mention on here about 6 weeks ago. I think someone said it was for the US market and not the European market. Personally I like it, but I also like the W800i too.

That's me.

I deliberately bought a K750 instead of the W800 based on looks alone. I had use of a W800 for a weekend and didn't feel that it had anything of use to me that my K750 didn't have.

The w800 definately is much better for playing mp3, no need to mess around with playlists etc. I flashed my 750i to a w800 and much prefer it for music and also will be good for holidays with flight mode.

just to correct a couple of folks..

yes its for the uk (march/april) and the major difference is it has 3G and obviously a colour refresh (plus a couple of minor software changes).

Having used one briefly I'd say it defo feels faster than the w800 and the addition of 3G can only be a bonus if only for grabbing pop3 email at superspeed!

I like my W900 for the 3g but I'm chomping at the bit for this with the obvious size advantages.

No, it only has EDGE and none of the operators in the UK (to my best knowledge) offer EDGE as an option. It doesn't have W-CDMA so you will only be able to use it as GPRS in the UK.

EDGE really only seems popular in the US region (plus a few other markets, but none as significant that I can think of) so it's fairly useless in Europe or Asia. A lot of European and Asian countries have/are adopting W-CDMA so that's the 3G standard you want on your phone.

wow.. shows the power of assumption, I never thought to ask :o I have heard EDGE may well come to the UK this year because of the issues around getting 3G coverage over 100% of the networks but I had honestly thought it was a 3G phone.

Either way, it does feel nice, certainly seems a fair bit better put together than the w800.

PS Superman..flight mode is where you have the handset on to listen to music but not able to receive calls so it can't mess with aircraft systems.

looks like a well nice phone.... looks even better now theres no joystick... them things are terriable... break after about a month!!!

The K750i doesn't come packaged with a 512mb memory card does it? The w800i does :)
You can buy a 1gb card on a certain auction site for £25 or so anyway. Upgrade the firmware to w800i and you have the same phone in a nicer looking shell!
This is all IMO of course... ;) :)

I know the price is appealing but those memory sticks are shocking fakes... obviously they function but I've tried a few and they literally fall to pieces.

You end up with 2 bits of plastic and a chip.. and no songs :(

As from today Orange have switched on their EDGE network. Apparently only covering 300 sites it should rise to 1500 sites by the end of the year (although bear in mind they have over 10000 cell sites).

ORANGE LAUNCHES UK'S FIRST EDGE NETWORK

EDGE complements the Orange 3G network, improving delivery of advanced mobile services in the UK

Five 3G and EDGE-enabled handsets available from Orange on launch

EDGE-enabled BlackBerry 8700g and Business Everywhere laptop data card launch this quarter

London. 1st February 2006. Orange today launched the UK's first live EDGE network, providing its customers with faster data speeds when using advanced mobile services such as email-on-the-move, the Internet, and music and video downloads.

Enhanced Data for GSM Evolution (EDGE) is an industry recognised technology that provides download and browsing speeds that are up to three-times faster than GPRS. Orange tested the EDGE network throughout 2005 and now has 300 network sites enabled for EDGE across the UK. Orange intends to have over 1,500 sites enabled for EDGE by the end of the year.

The EDGE network complements Orange's existing 3G network by providing enhanced delivery of advanced mobile services and by extending Orange UK's coverage for high data speeds. The Orange EDGE radio network is based on technology designed and supplied by Nokia and is live on the Orange network today.

Bernard Ghillebaert, Executive Vice President of Orange UK, said: "Orange is consistently recognised as having both the largest integrated second and third generation mobile network for data, and for delivering the best quality of service. The addition of EDGE strengthens our ability to offer both businesses and consumers access to high-speed data services in the UK."

At launch, there are five 3G and EDGE-enabled handsets in the Orange portfolio - the Nokia 6280, 6630, 6680 and N70, and the SPV M5000 (developed for Orange by Taiwanese manufacturer HTC).

In addition, Orange will also introduce two new EDGE-enabled products to the UK business market this quarter - the BlackBerry® 8700g(tm) and Business Everywhere laptop data card. Business Everywhere users will benefit from the best network for business and seamless access to the EDGE, 3G, GPRS.and Wifi networks. The BlackBerry 8700g features an Intel processor and a re-engineered device platform that supports faster Web browsing and application performance.

Across Europe, Orange now has EDGE networks in UK, France, Slovakia, Romania, Poland and Belgium (Mobistar).
