Sony KDL42W705 Thoughts?

I have seen mixed reviews about this tv but it's in my price range.

I previously had an lg 42inch tv but it suffers from terrible dirty screen effect. Argos are going to replace it hopefully and I saw this tv on offer.

I would only need to put £50 towards it.

One thing that scares me is that my previous tv was direct lit and this is edge lit.

Has anyone got one of these and if so have they seen any really noticeable clouding.

Is it a good tv for the price.

We would watch a lot of tv on it and I would be playing a lot of games on it.

Thanks in advance!

Hi

These are prefect TVs for gaming on they have super low input lag of around 14ms one of the lowest around.

The back lit system is good on the sony combined with a VA panel you will notice how much better the blacks are compared to your LG.

There is a chance of clouding yes but this can be said about most TVs its pot luck really just send it back if really bad :p

No tv is perfect :p

For £400 imo its a bargain :)

I have a corner sofa so where I sit I am not directly facing it. It's not a huge angle. Would this be very noticeable?

Previously I had an ips panel so this wasn't an issue

The blacks were rubbish on the LG, I was playing The Last of Us and it was all gray

Interesting timing, I literally ordered mine from John Lewis last week - they did a price match with Richer Sounds that were doing £429. (Argos don't deliver to Channel Islands so didn't even bother looking with them).

The Black Friday sale had it at £400 at JL so if you can get it for that then I would absolutely go for it. I read the HDTest review linked above and still looks like a worthy buy.

I know the W705 W706 is black and silver models, not sure about B though.

Lots of people complaining about the smart side of it. I don't care as I have a youview box and a PS4 so I really don't need that. I can only get an exchange in Argos so it's the only real decent one they have.

Is it true you can win a PS4?

The reviews have said it was slow to start but I recall reading a firmware update cut that down slightly

I didn't buy it for that anyway as I have a Raspberry Pi and Chromecast for all that but wanted a good quality TV with good blacks, good for movies/sport and this ticked all the boxes, particularly for the money.

No idea about PS4 if that was a question for me.

Nevermind, it say it ended in July.

I've heard it suffers from the dirty screen effect as well.

I hope it isn't as noticeable than my LG. It looked like a checkerboard!

The Viewing angles are much improved on this VA panel there not as good as IPS but you should be ok if its not a huge angle:)

Also about the slow start thing its not the tv that is slow to start up its the menu system it takes a few seconds to get going but it not really a big issue.

I don't really use the apps on the tv i use a chromecast stick and just stream everything from my phone to the tv works great :D also the tv will detect when the chromecast receives a signal and automatically switch to the correct input which is cool:cool: this works for PS4 also and you can even use the tv remote to control the PS4 :p

Sorry, that's what I meant by slow start.

From my point of view it's going to beat my 6 year old LG I got 2nd hand from a mate :D

I did hear about the slow start but I would never use the smart features and I have a Youview box, so I wouldn't need to use the built in Freeview.

This of course all depends on if Argos will let me exchange as the tv I have is no longer in stock in Argos.

But they may send it off for repair, but I would have thought getting a new panel installed on a tv would be costly, so fingers crossed they just let me put £50 towards this and get it.

So I went to Argos last night and got my TV sent back, they didn't even question the problems. Told them I had a ref number and she spoke to her manager and he said just let him exchange. The TV I wanted was in stock 30 mins before I got there...

When I got there it was out of stock. I should have reserved it but I wasn't sure I would be able to get it :(

Now I have reserved one at another Argos but it means I will have to get a taxi to put the TV in. I hope they don't mind :P

Got the TV and I love it, thank you everyone. I don't see a lot of DSE either. It's a lot less noticeable than the LG.

The only problem is the options button on the TV remote doesn't always work. The TV lights up when you press the button but it doesn't work always. Not a huge problem though and it's not worth sending back.

Hey congrats on your new purchase :D

As for the options button not showing try the following :p

Press the SEN button then select settings option which is in the top right corner looks like a tool box then from there select external inputs then select bravia sync settings then select device control keys and set it to normal.

Hopefully it should fix the options button not showing ;)

Thanks man :) I will see if that works, the only way it worked before was turning it off and then back on. :)
