Hi guys,

So my parents neighbor has an old Sony VAIO VGN-N38M laptop with 2GB ram and Windows Vista and it's really really slow (duh). I'd recommend them getting a new one but money is a bit tight with them so I guess getting a SODIMM 4GB set and putting Windows 7 x64 on it by me was a better choice.

So I got a Mushkin PC6400 4GB (2x2GB) 5-5-5-12 set, build it in, starts right up and at the Windows Vista loading screen it blue screened. Went into the bios, ofc. no bios timing settings... but, it did show 4096MB so it did recognize the sticks.

So then I started doing some testing.
1GB (old stick) + 1GB (old stick) = ALL OK
1GB (old stick) = ALL OK
2GB (new stick) = ALL OK
2GB (new stick) + 2GB (new stick)= BLUE SCREEN
2GB (new stick) + 1GB (old stick) = BLUE SCREEN

Then with 2GB (new stick) + 2GB (new stick) I started the Windows 7 SP1 installation from DVD and it blue screened as well.

I did have a look online and some sites say 2GB is the max for this laptop, some sites don't. After my testing I'd say it doesn't support 4GB as the sticks are OK.

Can anyone confirm this laptop supports 2GB max?

its best you ask Sony technical in Netherlands or which ever country you are in, they can better help you. They can check by looking at the technical manuals they have for the machines.

Thanks for your reply AMDPower :)

For anyone wanting to know the outcome, the maximum is 2GB (sigh...)
