If I'm reading this right then I'm annoyed...

UK, October 8, 2007 - Sony has confirmed reports that, following the announcement of its lower-specced 40GB PS3 on Friday, the older 60GB model will be phased from European retail over the coming months.

Sony's new 40GB PlayStation 3 slashes 126 GBP off the original price of the 60GB console, but sacrifices two USB ports, the multi-memory card slot and backward-compatibility with PSone and PS2 titles in the process.

As announced on Friday, the 60GB model will retail as a 349 GBP Starter Pack, including SIXAXIS controller and two first-party titles. However, Sony UK has told IGN, "Our offering in the UK market place for Christmas are the two SKUs announced on Friday but, as the 60GB stock is depleted, the 299 GBP 40GB SKU will be the only version available going forward".

Commenting on the new downgraded 40GB machine, Sony noted, "[it] represents all the power and potential of PlayStation 3 at a very compelling price. Whilst the feature set of the 40GB is a result of extensive feedback and research, all the 'missing' features, should some consumers require them, are easily upgraded with USB memory card readers, USB hubs, or bigger external USB or internal HDs.

"The only functionality that is being removed is backwards compatibility - and this is because we believe this less important now than when we launched, as there will be 65 PS3 games available by Christmas. Furthermore we believe we should now be devoting our resources to the future of PlayStation gaming and delivering next generation experiences".

While Sony is also phasing out its 60GB PS3 in the US, the company is offering an 80GB model, retailing at 599 USD, as an alternative purchase.

I hope the 80GB is over in the UK for a decent price by the time I get one next year, I don't want the crappy cutdown version. :(

I don't know why Sony have to keep messing stuff up for Europe. :o

I know what you mean, I dont really fancy a 'cut down' version.

Might have get a hold of a PS3 sooner than I planned before the 60GB's are gone.

On a side note I thought the BC was going to/already is, being done via software rather than a chip?

Yeah the Europe ones already do software emulation and the US ones have started to use software too. I don't know what they gain or how much money they save by removing it completely.

The only good thing here is that the PS3 has no games I want until mid 2008 but still I hope the 80GB is out here by that time.

Think they will introduce the 80Gb one later, dont think they would announce the 80Gb with loads of 60's Gbs about, it wouldnt make any business sense to announce it when there trying to clear the 60Gb stock. Its kind of how the US did it (and messed up lol), when they said about the 60 Gb being replaced by the 80 when 60's have all gone. That didnt go down well so perhaps this time there not going to announce it till closer to the 60Gb stock running low. Although Sony have a new model number for an unkown PS3 variant, rumors are going about a 160Gb PS3 with 2*HDMI and 3x Lan (like the orginal E3 version) but i dont think that will happen at all, maybe a 160 GB Hd version but not with all the extras.

So even if I buy a 60GB one now, the BC is done via emulation which they are going to stop supporting?

The new 40GB PS3 is missing a chip which is whats used for the software emulation. I know it sounds strange because that's basically what it was missing in the first place and only allowed software emulation but now it's missing another thing. So software emulation will never happen for the 40GB SKU.

That's what I gathered from the Joystiq article anyway.

EDIT: Also the 40GB SKUS are going to be the same in the US. So now you can laugh at the US people who laughed at us.

Nah I don't think they will stop supporting it because the US PS3's will still use it, the BC on PS3 is pretty darn good as it is now anyway.

2 HDMI's on a PS3? WHY!?

presume they are going to do DTS-HD and Dolby Digital HD via bistream

only connection capable of outputting that sort of bandwith is HDMI. spdif doesnt have the bandwith, even in optical form (which i dont understand, since everybody with big fat pipes have a fibre optic connection)

but anyway, the HDMI will be used to output bitstream high definition uncompressed audio to your HDMI equiped receiver.

and then another HDMI for the video :)

i presume ..

whats even more annoying is that they are not offering any freebies to those that splashed out £425 at launch, at least Microsoft did for those that brought the orginal xbox., but hey thats Sony for you i suppose

Didnt the xbox drop £100 after a month or so? Its been 425 for months, then it was 425 with 2 games and 2 controllers. You always pay more for early adopters my GFX card is worth £100 less than when i got it, its part of the electronics industry, LCD TV's, DVD players etc all drop in price in time. I guess as its Sony its because there evil and hate everyone why its so bad, actually maybe they should increase the price so us early adopters dont get upset.

Edit oh yeah i forgot us early adopters got a free Casino Royal on Blue ray :)

Sorry doesnt really make sense - the whole point of HDMI is that the audio and video go from the source to the amp in one cable (Im not even sure if Sony have the right to split the signal like this as it would be breaking the HDMI product description)

Bitstream is only worth it (so I understand from avforums) if you are going to
output the audio for the amp to decode - which again needs a whole new production method for BR

Laughin - I couldnt have said it better myself

Just heard microsoft are launching a new version of the 360. Unfortunatley the power socket has been removed and it comes without a CPU. Also the hard drive is only 512mb "but its much more quiet and efficient" Say top M$ spokesmen, "Youl'l barely know the difference" he tells a local special needs convention.

Oh no wait, thats a Sony thing again isnt it.

Really? Thats pretty **** then. I will probably get a PS3 eventually, maybe in a year or when MGS4 comes out and if I can't get anything other than a model which doesn't support BC i'll be annoyed.

It's a pet hate of mine when people say this, early adopters have always paid a premium for the pleasure, everybody knows that price drops will happen in the first year. When I buy something, I only do so when the price point is right for me and I feel like I'm getting my money's worth. If the system drops in price soon after (as it has, I bought my PS3 when the bundles were released), then I have no problem with that, because I bought it when I felt the time was right for me, knowing full well that the price would drop before christmas.
If you bought an 'enthusiast' CPU, then you wouldn't complain if it dropped in price by £100 within a year, because that's accepted with PC upgrades, so why is it different with consoles?
Same with people who 'have' to have a car with the latest reg numberplate, they do it knowing that the car has lost £1,000s in value the second they drive it off the forecourt, but you don't see them complaining.
Things drop in price, it's the way of the market, the consumer has no right to moan about it.
Sorry for the rant, I'm not moaning at you directly, but I've seen people say this on a number of forums and it's really irritating me!

Hello troll *waves*

eh ?

i allready do this. Video out through HDMI onto my TV and Audio out through optical to my receiver

5.1 AV surround goodness from Call of Duty etc.. !

the whole point of HDMI is not to make things in one signal. The whole point is the extra bandwith it offers. which is ideal for carrying stuff like 1080p video and high resolution uncompressed audio

Bitstream is only worth it (so I understand from avforums) if you are going to
output the audio for the amp to decode - which again needs a whole new production method for BR

and double eh ?

i allready do this, by outputting bitstream dolby digital to my receiver. I just then let my receiver decode the audio. I do this just fine on bluray already. Only difference with Dolby Digital HD will be the extra bandwith it requires. Full uncompressed dolby digital is too much bandwith for the optical spdif i use now.

Once the 60GB runs out they'll introduce a new version, probably 80GB or 120GB. Didn't they do the same in the USA?

For £300 it's still a cracking price for what you're getting.
Especially considering you can upgrade the drive yourself if you want, it even shows you how to in the PS3 instruction manual.

I'm very interested in a PS3 at £299. BC doesn't interest me in the slightest and anything else cut is nothing really.

If I bought a PS£ it would be the PS3 games and DVD functions, and not to play PS2 games. Just like my X360 as I use it for this generation of games not games from a previous era.
