I have an original set of MDR 1000x which I used for commuting and found them to be excellent. Obviously I'm doing a lot less of that nowadays. But I have found another use for them; my wife and I both work from home in a very echoey room. I literally live my life on conference calls on some very complex and detailed technical issues. When she also has meetings next to me she is fairly loud, often having social chats with her team before and after the main call and and laughing loudly, etc (I'm sure I am fairly loud to her too).

So I'm changing from a normal headset for conference calls to a super cardioid dynamic microphone (which has very good ambient noise rejection) and will use the Sony's as the headphones with noise cancellation turned on so I can hear the call.

My question... The 1000x are great and have good noise cancellation. But I have read in a few places that the XM2's and XM3 are considerably better in this regard. So if anyone has moved from the original 1000x to the XM2/XM3 then is that correct? I'd consider upgrading if they significantly better but wouldn't bother if the NC is only marginally better.

Thanks.

Can't answer the question but just letting you know a few people including myself pre ordered the Sony Xperia 1 ii which is released this week. We can claim the WH-1000XM3 as part of the deal so expect maybe a few to go up for sale, as I was planning to stick mine up for about £200 as I won't use them =)

Thanks for the heads up. I've already seen a few people selling off XM2's and XM3's. That's actually what prompted the question :)

My XM3’s are great, I fly every week (or did before this virus) and use them for commute to drown out he aircraft noise and screaming babies. The noise cancellation is simply the best I’ve heard and I tested a lot of cans before I settled on them. Before them I had some Jabra Elite 85h (They were stolen) which were also superb in the NC regard as well unlike the Sony’s allowed me to pair more than 1 device at a time, which something that bugs the life out of on the XM3’s.

I wouldn't fly without my XM3s anymore, just stick an audio book on and zone out completely, bliss.

I did have a listen to a colleague's original 1000x a while back, the noise cancelling wasn't hugely different, but the sound quality was a big step backwards.

XM4s are out imminently, I wouldn't upgrade until reviews are out.

Tried xm3 in a shop but immediately noticed muddy over powered bass. A real shame. Hope the 4's address this.

A mew firmware for the XM3 has addressed the muddy bass and they sound more balanced now:)

Ah really? Interesting. Didn't know this. Me and the GF noticed it right away. It was like 'i can be beats' too but actually worse in that regard!

Comfortable headset though and less dorky looking too

The XM3's have best in class noise cancelling. So it will be better. How much better is anybodies guess.
