Sony NGP possible release date

Sony mentioned that it would be affordable, I don't think anyone in their right mind would say £400-500 is affordable and they have to compete with Nintendo as well so I don't see the price being quite as steep as that. High £200's in my opinion, maybe £279.99 ish.

This is a possibility. Who knows maybe they will do this and take a deliberate loss (a la PS3).

I don't think I'm prepared to buy into it over fears that it will end up like the first PSP.

Yeah I agree, even though the power of it looked impressive in that Uncharted demo we have been here before in 2004/2005, Nintendo brought out the less powerful but more quirky console, Sony brought out a technical powerhouse and I wouldn't say the PSP was a disaster but the DS did beat it sales wise by more than 2 times the units. I guess the software library matters just as much, if not more than the hardware though, we'll have to see but it'll definitely be interesting.

When did they take a deliberate loss? The PS3 came out at £400 with no games didn't it?

I always thought that even when they were selling it at $599 they were still making a loss.

it cost them a lot more than that to manufacture the ps3 when it launched.

The PlayStation 3's initial production cost is estimated to have been US$805.85 for the 20 GB model and US$840.35 for the 60 GB model.[250] However, they were priced at US$499 and US$599 respectively,[251] meaning that every unit was sold at an estimated loss of $250,[250] contributing to Sony's games division posting an operating loss of ¥232.3 billion (US$1.97 billion) in the fiscal year ending March 2007.[252] In April 2007, soon after these results were published, Ken Kutaragi, President of Sony Computer Entertainment, announced plans to retire. Various news agencies, including The Times[253] and The Wall Street Journal[254] reported that this was due to poor sales, while SCEI maintains that Kutaragi had been planning his retirement for six months prior to the announcement.[254]

Sony didnt start making a profit on the console until early 2010, nearly 3 YEARS after it was launched.

I promise you it will be more than that mate.

Gamesmaster previewed it after having played it, they said they expect it to come in at over £400.

I hope your right tho lol

I'll be surprised if it's over £300 but like you say it's possible. :)

I just think if they want to compete with Nintendo this time round they have to learn lessons, though saying that 67 million units sold probably says they don't really need to learn lessons.

Yeah I just don't see how they can drop the price lower than £300 if you look at the spec of the thing, that's kinda what GM are saying.

Its Sony they can change what they want and it will still sell imo :P

Considering the tech that's in it £300 would be reasonably priced. It mat cost a lot but it looks like it would cost a lot to produce. Remember tech wise it makes the 3DS and IPAD2 look like cheap garbage and we all know the IPad2 will not cost less than £300.

Reports also had this at 280K yen about $280, who knows TBH. Good to know they will release a 3G/GPS version and a normal one with just Wifi to keep the cost down. Sony will take a loss on the cheaper one and prob make a bit on the 3g version i reckon £250 for wifi and £320 for 3G/GPS.

I'd raid my sons piggy bank if it comes in at that price, probably be a day one purchase for me. I've got no interest in the 3DS, but my PSP has more than payed for itself over the years, so I wouldn't mind paying circa £300 for something that sounds as well specified as this.

I'll wait and see what launch titles we get and pricing, OS, battery life, features etc.

My PSP has kept me sane on long journeys so i'm happy to buy into the NGP if it's right for me.
