Regulatory filings indicate that Sony is planning to release a model of the PlayStation 3 that would include and 80GB hard drive in the near future. Due to changes within the Bluetooth module, the company was required to file an application to request permission to release it within the US with the FCC, which controls products that transmit or receive radio frequencies.

Sony is not commenting on the existence of the updated PS3, or whether the new model would replace one of the currently available consoles that come in 20GB and 60GB versions. Speculation is rife that the decision may have something to do with the current market conditions for HDDs, where smaller drives are becoming more expensive and mid-sized capacity drives continue to get cheaper.

I know a thousands of people are going to say they're ripoff merchants (especially those who bought a PS3) but at the ened of the day you chose to pay for a product you thought was worth the money.

But but but hardware revisions are just like so wrong man really unfair on the consumer and you've like not even had 3 days play out of it and ...........

As I said before I expect that hardware revisions will become fast and furious throughout this generation because the competition is hotting up.

This is all brilliant for us, I wonder what the next generation will bring in say 3 years time or less. Infact I wonder how long this generation will last.

Anyone know how long previous generations lasted for Sega, Sony, NES etc ?

why 80gb ? why is that any better than a 60gb? Surely theyd want to at least match, or beat xbox with a 120gb drive, seing as the prices are not that much greater between the 2, especially when bought in bulk

i see this as a waste of time, and in a way, if its the same price, a way to annoy current ps3 owners, 360 owners have no right to complain about hdmi, they paid 280 at launch because they thought it was a fair price, so they cant moan about a pack being released for 350 with hdmi and a 120gb hdd, especially seing how fast tech moves, and it was released and has been the same price now for 18 months!

They'll proabably be wanting t save as much money as they can on the production of the PS3, this is just an early sign of what's to come.

A lot! :p

Joking aside, it is more to do with harddrive market, many manufacturers now stopped making 60GB therefore more expensive to buy when you could get a bit bigger ones for cheaper. OCUK doesn't even sell 60GB.

Better bluetooth? :D

How would increasing the size of the HDD save money? Surely it would cost more? Unless obviously they priced the 80GB higher, which is doubtful, due to its high price already, low price difference between 60 and 80gb hdds and the ease of user upgading?

It doesnt matter at all - Im more than happy with 60Gb and its a 2 minute job (which sony have officially explained how to do within the PS3 instructions) to upgrade it if you need to.

This will probably be why Europe never got a 20Gb. The 20Gb drives are probably killing them on cost.
And TBH they probably thought they would add it on since they had to file a request anyway. Doubt it will materialise tbh. Will believe it when it comes from Sony.

A bit similar to RAM.

When 20/60GB are not selling well in market as people now buy bigger drive, the cost bumps back up because smaller drives aren't mass produced anymore due to low demands. Any drives that are mass-produced is cheaper to make.
