hi guys im looking for some advise
I really like the looks of the camer mentioned above.
I know nothing about cameras, but what I do want is good quality pictures and video for my holiday. I would then use the camera for when I go to motor sports events, again pics and videos will be what I want.

I dont know the correct terminoligy but I want to do macro shots as well and in general just try and get in to photography but the camera will have to do me for a few years and my budget is £500

I have seen come reviews and it really does look ideal for me.

I have the original (Mk1) RX100.

Great little camera - quality of pictures is excellent (RAW and .jpg), small and pocketable. full manual options if you wish. Good flash and viewfinders is very clear and nice to view even in bright sunshine etc. Fantastic sensor and works great even at ISO 3200.

Downside - reach (zoom) is a bit on the short side for motorsports etc.

It's unlikely the RX100 will have enough reach to take anything at motorsport events of decent quality but then again there aren't many options in this price bracket that will (don't get tricked by bridge cameras boasting of zoom ranges, they're truly awful). You could /potentially/ get a second hand NEX that could sort of give you some range to get started because you can change the lenses on those (RX100 is fixed), Micro 4/3s is also an option.

I'm looking at one of these as well. However from what I understand the continuous shooting drops very quickly that with the short zoom makes it less than ideal for motorsport photography.

Nothing that has the range will have the autofocus performance. Shooting motorsport will is expensive it's just one of those things

fair enough, im not expecting 2 grand picture quality / professianl shots when i go to the racing but i do want quality pictures of the stuff mentioned above.

so can any 1 recomend somethin in my price range? or how much I would need to save?

As Ksanti says, motorsports (and most sports) are just about the hardest things to shoot from an equipment perspective. You need plenty of reach, big sensor so capture plenty of light and big lenses to get the reach with a wide aperture, accurate and fast auto focus with focus tracking and high speed buffer on the camera.

An Ideal setup would set you back 10-20 grand so you can imagine that a 500quid budget doesn't take you that far.

You could get a Nikon D5100 for around 300 quid and a Tamron 70-300mm VC for 270. This is probably around the best quality you will get for anything close to your budget but you would still need another lens for regular photography.

Another option would be a Olympus E-PL5 with 14-42mm and 40-150mm lenses for £399.99. You have a great all round camera setup that is pretty small. the 40-150mm wont get you the same reach as the above Nikon setup but is cheap and tiny. You could get the EPL-5 with just the 14-42mm lens for £320 but to get a longer lens than the 40-150mm would likely mean the Panasonic 100-300mm lens at £420

There is also a Nikon 1 J2 + 10-30mm & 30-110mm Lenses £308. This will give slightly better focus performance than the EPL-5 , the 30-110 lens will have the same reach as the olympus 40-150mm*.

*) These 3 cameras all have different sized sensors, so the same lens length in mm (e.g. 100mm) will enlarge a distant subject different about. For get Equivalence, multiple the Nikon 5100 length by 1.5, the Olympus EPL-5 by 2.0 and the Nikon J2 by 2.7x.

You could also get a Canon or Sony setup similar to the Nikon 5100. Sony sells small NEX cameras but the lenses all need to be just as big as the Nikon 5100 uses. Likely For any canon, Sony or Nikon crop camera the Tamon 70-300mm VC is your best lens to get quality and reach.

This got me looking and i really like the D5200, i have look ed at lots of youtube clips and reviews but i want to know from any 1 who uses 1 or has used one what its really like. even better if they have shot some motorsport . i know im not going to get perfect pictures but this is my first proper camera and i dont know how well im going to get on with it / get in to it.

I don't think you will find anyone to have much to say against it. At this price level the DSLRs from Canon and Nikon are likely to be great performers. If you want to see some samples head over to flickr and search for what you are after, for example:

https://www.flickr.com/search?sort=relevance&text=D5200 motorsport

if you click on the pictures, then click on the (i) icon it will take you what kit it was taken with.
