According to GameDaily, Sony Computer Entertainment and Immersion have settled their patent litigation and enter into a business agreement to work on future products. Immersion filed suit against Sony in 2002 for what they believed were patent infringements on their force feedback technology, resulting in a $90.7 million judicial decision against Sony.

But today, it appears the two companies have made nice. Here's what Sony boss Kaz Hirai has to say of his new business partners:

We look forward to exploring with Immersion exciting new ways to bring the largest and best range of gameplay experiences to our customers. We are very excited about our new partnership with Immersion and the potential for new and innovative products incorporating their technologies.
Does this mean we'll soon see rumble in the SIXAXIS? It's unknown at this point, but Immersion head Victor Viegas says they hope "to make technical proposals very soon with respect to use of our technology in the PlayStation products." Oh, it's just good news all around!

Rumble doesnt really bother me, but I know a lot of you peeps will see this as good news :)

Excellent news, If people try a game with/without rumble or used a steering wheel with/without feedback I am sure they would prefer having the rumble/feedback..

Does anyone know how Sony got in this situation? the Wii and 360 both have rumble/feedback, so I assume they have agreements with Immersion, or is this something different?

Sony and Microsoft also have had their fair share of legal skirmishes related to their gaming unit controllers. In 2002, Immersion sued Microsoft and Sony over the vibration feature in the Xbox and PlayStation controllers. Immersion settled with Microsoft for some $26 million and won a court decision against Sony for $80 million.

Nintendo was never actually sued by Immersion afaik.

Nintendo use a different technology.
Microsoft knew they were infringing (like Sony), but Microsoft paid them off straight away and got to use it, whereas Sony took Immersion to 3 seperate re-trials, all of which were thrown out immediately because it was clear Sony were using Immersions rumble technology and as a result, they got fined a hefty sum of money.

so does that mean you got to buy another controller if they can now use it?, and what about the controller that comes with the PS3, will they offer a free replacement or just start shipping out new controllers with the retail boxes in a few months time?

all good news, rumble is to me is a important part of gaming

So ontop of the £500+ you're going to have to shell out to get a PS3, HDMI lead and a couple of games, at some point down the line you may well end up shelling out on a couple of rumble pads too.

I would bet that it will be released seperately, won't be a replacement service. It will be like when Microsoft released the 'S Controller' for the Xbox.

Sony have always made money via it's peripherals, with so much being included in the console and no chance of a multitap (A big earner for PS1 and quite good on PS2) and no need to purchase a Memory Card as standard, I think Sony will be happy to have this as a seperate peripheral.

can see it now

Phil Harrison's next speech/quote will be - "although we said rumble is last gen and we decided to ditch it because of the lawsuit we consider it very important for current gen games and you all will be missing out on this new great feature we have managed to secure with Immersion for all our PS3 fans, "

lol

LOL - I can imagine that too, the way they spin things is unbelievable sometimes!

Will this be phill harrison's big announcement next week?

Probably...

Wouldn't it be great if the European conosles all had rumble installed as a thank you from sony to make up for the lack of backwards compatibility :p (It's not going to happen though as I'm sure all of the consoles due for Europe have probably already been manufactured, boxed and sent to their respective destinations long ago with more arriving all the time ready for launch). But, I hope they implement it during or before the summer as that's when I'll be buying my PS3 and I badly want it to utilise and include rumble even if few games out by then don't fully utilise it yet. I think Rumble is so important that it's almost taken for granted. I mean, imagine playing Table Tennis (Rockstar Games) on the PS3 without rumble? How would you know if you had overcooked a shot?

Whappers.

They aren't just going to start sticking a rumble controller in with PS3's. It'll anger too many early adopters. Maybe in a year or two.

I thought the reason there was no rumble in the PS3 (other than the lawsuit) was it made the sixaxis motion sensor go doolally.

I'd say the settlement is just the final nail in the ongoing legal fight and they've now paid up.

Hope they do find a way to get rumble in aswell as sixaxis, it makesa major difference to a lot of games.

Maybe, but look at it from another direction. This should have been introduced from the start and having it not out now means that there are more and more games that are not going to have this essential feature. In my opinion, the sooner games are made with rumble feature in mind the better. Rumble is a massive feature for a lot of people. A couple of friends of mine didn't believe me when I told them the PS3 didn't utilise rumble. That's an idea of how granted this simple feature is taken. The longer they prolong the introduction of rumble the more they are shooting themselves in the foot. They need to need to have at least equal features with the other consoles in order to be a major hit and Rumble is one of those features I believe. The sooner they implement rumble, the better for all I believe. They may as well take the initiative and work immediately on getting rumble implemented again thanks to todays settlement. My opinion of course ;)

Maybe, but I think it's gonna have more to do with Playstation Home.

Well they used that as an excuse but it was since proven to be false by someone who modded a 360 controller to use motion control.

But but sony said rumble was last gen and not needed anymore. :o

Wonder how long its gonna take them to do a 180 and pretend that statement never happened.

And the Wii ;)

IIRC they said it couldn't work with the tech in Sixasis not motion sensing in general. THough maybe now they will license the whole tech from Immersion, as iirc they had rumble and some form of motion sensing, so maybe they will partner up and find the solution.
