I've just bought a Sony STR-DN1050 to replace an old Denon AVR-2805.

It's connected to my PC by the HDMI output from a GTX970. The output from the amp is to a Sony TV (KDL-50W685).

When the TV and the amp are both switched on, Windows shows the TV as the playback device (left image). If the TV is switched off, the amp shows (right image).

This confuses various programs (particularly Kodi) when the devices change.

Any idea if there might be a setting on the amp or the TV that stops the switching, such as the amp only broadcasting itself as the receiver rather than broadcasting the TV when that's switched on?

Many thanks.

The HDMI handshake is doing what it's supposed to do, which is to show that final sink device in a valid chain of HDMI devices with HDCP content protection. KODI is probably expecting a display device to be always on when in use, so unless you reboot the KODI host device after turning off the TV then it probably doesn't understand to re-initiate a handshake again.

If there's a setting to circumvent this then I doubt it will be on the TV or AV receiver because some media needs a positive HDCP handshake before it will play.

There are devices around to help overcome these issues. They store the EDID of the device being switched on and off so that it always appears present in the display chain. A similar result can be achieved if the HDCP is stripped from the signal, but be aware that some media might not play ball.

Have a look here as a start: http://www.tweaking4all.com/home-theatre/remove-hdcp-hdmi-signal/
