Hi, recently my Pioneer VSX 922 died and I couldn't justify getting a like for like replacement at the moment so in the Black Friday sales I picked up a cheap Sony STRDH550 to tide me over. In general I've been impressed so far for the price (£130) and it's working fine apart from 1 really annoying problem.
In its settings menu there is an option under HDMI for where to output sound to, AMP + TV or AMP Only. The first option seems to be the default and it means the amp sends the sound to the TV as well as to the speakers currently connected (5.1 for me). In theory not a problem, just turn the TV volume to 0 I thought but what it actually does is down sample the sound to whatever the TV can support and use that even for it's own speakers. That means as my TV (Panasonic 50ST60) only has stereo speakers it converts everything down to stereo. Now if I set this option to AMP Only then it works fine and I get full 5.1 but no matter how times I set it, every time I turn the amp off it resets back to AMP + TV so every time I want to use it I have to go into the settings menu and change it again, extremely annoying!
All the other settings I changed seem to save correctly, it's just this one that wont and the manual and online support don't seem to mention anything about it.
Does anyone here have any experience with this amp or any suggestions on what else to try?
