My old laptop finally died on me and I'm thinking of getting a Sony F Series as it seems to be a much better machine than the E Series so worth paying the extra. However, wondering whether or not if it is worth paying the extra for Core i7 versus Core i5. Will mostly use for MS Office tasks, photo editing (Lightroom and Photoshop) plus the odd bit of gaming (BFBC2 etc).

Worth the extra for the i7 over i5?

i5 for less heat and better battery life. i7 quad cores just OTT in a home / mobility laptop imo. i5 (or i7 ULV dual-core) have IGPs and optimus / switchable graphics, which helps keeping it cool and away from the mains.

what's the reason for buying Sony?

I just had my S series die on me within 2 months of getting it. Didnt abuse it with any games, just web and office stuff. Mobo got fried (duno how, duno why).

Then i went and looked online, Sony is taking a run of problems with their Vaios and build quality. My advice, save money on paying the "sony tax" and buy another brand, i5 should do. If you need to spend the money, then buying another brand will allow you to get the i7.
