I'm trying to resolve this problem with my mates laptop. (Approx 5 years old - P4 with 256MB RAM)

Essentially you press the power on button and you can hear the cpu fan/hdd kick into life, but then about a second later it just turns itself off.

Things I have checked so far.

- Power Supply
- Battery
- Removed HDD and tested with my desktop PC - works fine.

The issue used to be an intermittent one, I.E. it did happen occasionally but it would boot after a few attempts, now it just doesn't boot at all.

I don't think it's a power supply problem as when plugged into the AC, the system led's come on to say it's charging.

I suspect it's a mobo failure or similar - any thoughts before I chuck it out the window? :p

Thanks in advance :)

I would definitely take a look at the RAM; I had a similar problem with my old Dell D610, where the laptop would refuse to boot, as the DIMM Slot had burnt itself out, so the RAM wouldn't work.

Try and find some known-working RAM, and try each slow separately.

I had the same problem with a Sony Vaio pg-101 . Pressed the on button , the led's flashed once , made a few clicks and went off .My HDD was fine too . All things led to a faulty motherboard . This Sony Vaio cost me about £900 6 to 7 years ago and was used about once a month for my accounts .I sold it for spares on ebay for £61 :-( and vowed never to buy another Sony . I see motherboards on the same auction site going for around £149 for other models , me thinks it wouldn't be worth considering the cost of new laptops nowadays .Sell it for spares I say ..
