This is possibly the worst job I've ever had. I agreed to replace a DVD-RW in a Sony VIAO for a customer which is a job i've done a few times before.

The first problem came as I was removing everything to get to the DVD drive, when I snapped the ribbon for the touchpad, disabling the mouse! Fortunately the guy wasn't too bothered about that as he used an external mouse. 'phew!' I thought, 'a lucky escape' as it's the first error I've made that I haven't been able to correct myself.

He took the laptop back until I could order a drive in (delivery times have been slow in the lead up to xmas).

I took delivery of the new drive this morning and the guy dropped his laptop round at 9 this evening. A few hours later, exhausted from anger and feeling extremely helpless, I sit in front of a Sony VIAO with 3 fairly deep scratches in the screen. After getting my hand prints on the monitor, I decided I'd better clean it up. I must have caught some grit under the screen wipe though. So basically, it looks like I'm going to have to fork out for a replacement screen :( I'm so angry with myself

It's a 15.4" WXGA X-black coated widescreen Sony VIAO LCD, which is probably about as expensive as you can get on a laptop? Any ideas on where to get a new screen and how much it might be? Or does anybody know of any places that might be able to repair it?

You might be able to polish the marks out if they are not too deep...

If not, I usually get screens from a well known auction site.

The cheapest I've got a screen for is a tenner, but this is a 1024 x 768 one, and I think you'll probably be wanting a higher res one. If you do replace, keep the old screen, you could build a projector or something like that with it. :)

You might try here for a new screen

I've never used them myself. They have a UK contact number.

Here's their Sony notebook display page

Should give you an idea of availability and likely price point. It looks like an 'ouch'.
