Sony Vaio screen problems

I've got a Sony Vaio VGN-C1Z and the screen has seemingly developed a fault. The screen is flickering in areas that are displaying colours, and the colours are pixellated/dithered instead of smooth. VGA out to an external panel is fine so I assume the problem is with the laptop screen itself.

Anybody know what's likely to be the issue? Inverter perhaps?

Inverter just controls the back.light , I would suspect its the LCD cable or LCD itself .
