Hey guys,

Looking to get a laptop since starting uni next week, needs to be good for running CS3 (photoshop etc) and general multimedia and some gaming since i have Call of duty 4.

Been researching the Sony Vaio VGN-FW11E (£699) for some bizarre reason it is £100 more here then on the official Sony site with same specs, what's that about?

Anyway this seems a great laptop for all my needs but i just wanted some opinions or if anyone has the FW series? It has the Radeon HD 3470 (256MB) never used ATI before so just wondering how that would cope in gaming to some degree, cod4 & css mostly.

Cheers.

Bought one a week ago, its pretty quick for a laptop once you get all the crap of it. I like the fact it runs cool with the new montevino chipset, and the 1600x900 res is great, room for an app and a tutorial by the side of it. Research that hd3470 as it may be a weak point, don't bother me as I am only a casual gamer.

Was thinking of getting it myself. In the end the fact that I could get something better and cheaper from Dell outlet stole my custom.

You may be interested to know that it's £699 in PCWorld as well... could probably haggle or get a free carry case at least, plus you could walk away with it that day and always go back if you've any problems.

I'd expect at least a Geforce 8600GT for that money, in fact from Rock you can get a 7950GTX equipped laptop for slightly more...

The Xtreme 770 is £900 from Rock, far too much for what i had in mind, plus it has less RAM which i really need for CS3 and doesn't look as good. I only plan on getting this for general use for now since in Jan i will be buying a 4870 X2 Quad system like the 'Ultima OC HD 4870 X2' system here at OcUK.

James - What have you tried it with, what games and applications also what would you rate it out of 10?

Well i was going to go into the Sony Centre since i have one here in town and get everything there, wouldn't mind paying a little extra.

What did you get from Dell? I'm really not too sure about dell with quality and hear bad things all the time.

Am using it with dreamweaver and fireworks, and its quick, no games yet. I've done a clean install of vista though, which helps. Rating 7 or 8.

Hmm perhaps I saw it without VAT, heh. Anyway if you're not gaming much you can get much cheaper laptops with an 8600GT that should be sufficient for casual gaming.

Edit: Perhaps the Vostro might be worth looking at, or a Toshiba Satellite Pro?

A good laptop is a cool laptop (both thermally and cosmetically).
The vista experience rating on mine is 4.7, and that's the gaming graphics.

I'd say be careful, as the build quality on those is pretty poor to be honest. Sony build quality isnt anything to shout home about these days, so definately look around and see if theres anyone else offering something good on your budget.
