Sony vaio dvdrw not reading written dvds or burn dvds

My cus asked me to help him with his vivo, forgot model number sry but anyhow i tested it and it will read cd/cdr etc but no longer read burnt dvds tho i think he said original dvds work tho haven't tested. Also he cant burn anything any more.

Windows error reports a error and suggested that it was a faulty cable.

Are dvdrw cables for laptops easy to come by if so we might try getting one to test see if it is the cable but first i wanted to know what opinions ppl have with the prob im describing.

He had this exact prob before and got the drive replaced as was found faulty and he said 3 months after replacement same thing happened so he was a bit peeved about that.

If it is the drive is there any guides on how to replace a laptop dvdrw, also which would be a good replacement? Its a silver vivo lappy so a silver tray cover would be best but i duno owt about which drive to get if it is the drive thats faulty.

PS - I the drive is a Matshita UJ-831 DA
PPS - model is i think VGN-FS115B

Try cleaning the lense with a soft cloth, but it sounds like its buggered. You can get replacements but I think the plastic bezel on that drive is screwed on so a new type drive will fit but your bezel won't. you have take all the screws out the base and under the hd flap and memory flat to change the drive on this model.

I've got the same problem at the moment but my drive doesn't read anything at all.

My model is the PCG-GRT816S. I'm struggling to find a replacement drive anywhere ?

Can anyone help ?

I'm looking at the same ones on ebay, there all about £33 odd.

Im going to try and find the product number of the drives and see if i can find a match for those.

I was thinking of the ones on sale on ocuk site. Or do they have to be the exact same model and brand as my cus has had two of these matshita drives and he wants a better brand one, so was thinking of a samy from ocuk. Duno if it would fit etc, how would i find out this info?

any Ide laptop drive will fit but some older type drives had proprietry bezels, nearly all new drives with in the last few years use the same fitting, if yours is the newer type your ok, other wise you have to use it wthout the plastic bezel on.
