Morning all,

My PS3 has keeled over this morning. The fabled 'Yellow Light of Death'. The console powered itself off whilst launching the Crystal Defenders demo. Upon trying to power it back on, green light for 0.5 second, yellow light for 0.5 second, then a flashing red light accompanied with 3 beeps. Googled the problem, the internet suggests reseating the hard drive, which I have. No joy, the same problem persists.

Phoned Sony, after hearing of other poster's very positive experiences to be told that : 'You have a 60gb console. The warranty on all 60gb has now expired. Sony have decided that any faults on 60gb consoles will now have to be paid for. Oooh, we can try putting into safe mode though.' After a bit of digging, Sony made this decision on February 11th.

They *have* offered to swap the console for another 60gb for £145. That's £145 that I haven't got, and to be honest would rather not pay. This will also not pay for the copy of Killzone 2 that's stuck in the drive .Does anyone know where I stand with regards to the Sale Of Goods Act?

Was that an automated message or what? What worries me is how many of the launch PS3's have died (mine included) but luckily I got a replacement that I had since sold on ebay. I just got another 80GB and be done with it too many good games to pass up that are coming up KZ2 etc otherwise I wouldn't have bothered.

I have heard that the main problem that causes YLOD is down to the PSU. Seen many a video on youtube with the user fixing it themselves by installing a new PSU. Since you have no warranty I would crack your unit open and get your copy of KZ2 (if all else fails.)

Nope, not an automated message. An advisor told me that. I don't think he meant to let slip the dates tbh. I'm looking into possible fixes now, specifically PSU fixes...

Sadly they are well within their rights to do this however as the warranty has expired ;/

I'd attempt to fix myself tbh, and if that fails a price cut is due as close as the end of this month. Sorry can't really give any better advice than that.

Phone them up again and ask to speak to the manager, quote the SOGA especially "reasonable time" that your PS3 should last. Provided that you bought the unit around release it was £425, to last 2 years is taking the proverbial tbh.

I played hell with them and they sorted my console out, I think I had the lady on the phone close to tears the second time I had a problem with my console she was adamant that nothing could be done, that didn't last very long.

They broke the console with a firmware update.....

That's what I told them late last year before I even got into what was wrong so right from the get go they didn't have a leg to stand on. In the end it was a fault with my TV :-/

To be fair they are coming up to 2 years of age, didn't they stop doing the 60Gb in the UK around September 2007?

Surely a mass consumer product that costs in excess of £400 should last for more than 2 years. Granted it is Sony, but still they are just taking customers for a ride.

Of course, but unless you can get a result by using the SOGA you don't really have any other options, the actual warranty from Sony is only a year after all.

Funny thing is I bet that if you got the continuous play they would sort it out with no problems.

How does that thing work? Could you sign up when your PS3 actually breaks? Then it'd be like a one off payment of £2 to get it fixed!

the insurance from them is on a month by month basis, so take out the insurance, ring up say its broke, get your replacement, cancel your cover. wash rinse repeat as required.

whether they would send you another 60gb model or not I dont know, but they will definately replace it

Was this after mid-February?

Rather amusingly, having just read the small print for Continuous Play, it doesn't actually say anything about signing up *after* the console is broken.... :p

edit - However, being essentially an insurance policy, it's a bit dodgy :p

Just to clarify regards the SOGA.

The Sale of Goods Act is between you and the retailer, so ringing Sony and quoting it will do you no good at all unless you bought it direct from them - which I doubt.

If you still have proof of purchase then you could try getting it repaired under SOGA by the retailer where you bought it from, but I would do a little research first and try going through a customer service dept (pref by email) rather than going into the store as they will know very little baout it.

Best thing to do is to get a point of contact, i.e. one person to deal with in customer services and email them the fault with quotes of and links to the SOGA. Also stand your ground if they refuse and tell them you are willing to take it all the way to the small claims court - they should back down eventually.

Its £5 a month and it says encounter any problems with your PS3 and within 2 days they will send out a replacement console, it also covers damage that you have caused physically to the console and also covers any trouble that you could encounter with the device itself.

If they still don't play ball, I would sign up like you said then get them to replace the unit say a week later.
