I have a fully legit, Fully licensed copy of Sophos antivirus.

I have currently got installed avast anti virus. Which is great free antivirus software.

My question is this, How good is sophos in comparison to free avast

Sophos is a brilliant antivirus, albeit not a particularly pretty one.

I used to swear by it at corporate level (when I had the choice of suite).

My dads work used to have sophos, when the years licence ran out they installed AGV free addition and found over 60 viruses that sophos had missed. Im pretty sure it didnt update daily either, they would send you out an update disc every month

Must have been a pretty crap version of sophos then.

It updates all the time.

We use sophos at my work. To be honest I don't like it at all. I find the enterprise console not very good at all. Alerts never seem to be cleared, updating seems to be a bit laborious, if it works.

I find the on demand scan can easily grind a pc to a halt, very heavy on disk usuage and resources.

In short I personally think it is awfull...

It's okay. Nothing more than that. It notices so many false positives (i.e. I installed DameWare remote control the other day and it told me it was acting suspiciously) it just seems to want to be noticed.

I'd say it was better than the free alternatives though.

Thats another main problem that we have with Sophos. Even if the files are in the exclusion areas, they still get detected... It's a real pain.

We've been using it for about 3 years now, i'd say it's middle of the road - annoyingly it has trouble removing certain viruses and has a propensity to class ones it can't get rid of as just 'generics', meaning there is no specific way to remove it.

I think if we could make the choice again, we'd opt for kaspersky - when you click remove, it removes it!

I'm posting from my work desk at Sophos HQ :p

So I'm bound to say it's awesome

But it really isn't meant for the home user, it is very light but we only aim at the business user, that's not to say you can't use it though

Do you work in support?

If you do, i must say your support is one of the best i have used.

We used to have sophos at the business level, but the cost of the renewal meant we moved to trend.

We use Sophos for all our networks and find it does the business. Sometimes the error reporting you get in the console isn't very useful and the search engine on the Sophos knowledge base is pants :D
