had my car parked in my garden (private land) since december

i received a letter telling me they were now fining me £100 or so

shouldnt they at least of sent me a warning letter?

i was going to tax and reinsure it on the 29th of this month :(

im guessing theres nothing i can do

i know i should have filled out the SORN notification

i was supposed to get it back on the road end of jan but i didnt ;(

i just think its a litle harsh...a warning letter would have been nice and i would have SORNd it that day

oh well

Its very clear on the renewal notification that you either have to tax it or declare it SORN. You've got 0% chance of appealing it so I would just pay it and move on.

SORN.. ahh, I've been stung by this one before.

One of the DVLAs money traps perhaps? No warning of expiration and extorsionate fines for something so petty.

I got fined £40-45 a year or two ago when I forgot to re-declare sorn on a Gilera moped that I keep at home in the cow shed!! (fenced off lol)

Bearing in mind that taxing said moped only costs (or did back then) around £12 for a year!!

Its a stupid system they run, It would make more sense to allow people to declare an eternal sorn for an undisclosed period of time.. then people could re-tax when they needed to.

I had that happen a couple of years back, I quickly MOTed it and then taxed it. Then I sent a letter back with the cheque and a copy of the tax disk etc, they ended up sending me the cheque back and didn't take the money.

I had the same thing with my old off road landy, they never sent me a letter telling me the sorn was about to be up..
The tried this with my stepfathers car, he did get a letter either.
Its a new stealh tax tbh

i didnt

but ok thanks all for your help

The "Tax it or SORN it" notice is a reminder isn't it?
Or did you expect a further additional reminder? Honestly people complain about the nanny state then on the other hand complain that the DVLA didn't sufficiently wipe their bottoms before fining them for non-compliance.

No warning of expiry? There certainly is.
In a fenced off cow shed? So what?
Unlimited time SORN declaration? Think of the issues that would create. The burden of enforcement would rely on an opt-in rather than an opt-out system, which would create far more load on the limited resources of the DVLA in terms of chasing people down, proving not SORN, etc.

At the moment, you do nothing, you rightly get fined. With your system, you do nothing, and they don't discover it until you happen to get caught, which could be years or never. Of course you could still get people systematically declaring their cars SORN year after year even if they were using them day in day out, but this way the person has no excuse for "forgetting" to re-tax their car.

my old man has a porsche that has been garaged away since about 1992, it has never been sorned and theyve never writen to him either

That's because it was off road before the SORN rules came in <rolls eyes>

This has just happened to me :(. I'm out of the country mostly studying in Vienna for the year. Came back this evening to a mountain of post including one saying I have to pay a fine of £80 :(.The insurance was £15 it's ridiculous I have to pay £80. I definitely didn't get a reminder letter (I asked my Dad to look out for one as I wanted to avoid this happening). I think it's outragous I'm being treated like a criminal when all I've done is own a scooter and keep it in the garden.

Had this happen to me, my car was in the garage for ages, tax ran out, didn't renew it for 2 months after, had to pay tax for the 2 months and a fine.

Bit annoying to say the least.

Did you think they would go back and write letters to every owner of a car ever who never scrapped a car officially or otherwise SORNd it? I must have about about 5-10 cars alone in my name.
