I've been kind of looking to go Intel for a while now, and think maybe now the time (read price) is right.

Can I get better value for money for around this price (£270)?

Gigabyte DS3P (Rev 3.3 supporting 1333)
C2D 6420
Corsair 2GB DDR2 XMS2-6400C5 TwinX

I'm not bothered about Vista yet, but would like to dual boot XP and Ubuntu. Really, I'm just checking that the RAM would be fine for a ~3GHz OC. And that the mobo is decent (no need for firewire) :)

Thanks for your time!

I concur.

As far as dual booting I know that 6.10 didn't have support for the DS3's on-board Ethernet controller as shipped, you had to add it which was always a hassle because you'd have to download the package on one machine then transfer it over. 7.04 is now out and it's supposed to remedy this but I haven't tested it myself.

Cool, thanks for your help. Any opinions whether a 6600 is worth the extra? I mean, the more speed the better, but TBH 3GHz is enough for gaming and folding!

Depends the 6420 will probably clock to 3Ghz anyway, waste of money perhaps getting the 6600 after the new models introduced.
