Been out of the PC scene a long time. Anyway, my old A64 is getting on a bit. I dont really play PC games anymore, maybe the odd game of CS:S. Since the wifes Laptop is faster than my PC I think it maybe time to upgrade.

My current specs run like
A64 @ 2.1Ghz
1GB DDR @ 210FSB
9700Pro
blah blah

I would like the fastest CPU/Mobo/Ram combo within my budget since this means I wont have to upgrade anytime soon :)

Heres what I have short listed, no real thought put into it as of yet

AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 6400+ Black Edition 3.20GHz (Socket AM2) - Retail - £117.49 inc VAT
Asus M2R32-MVP Crossfire (Socket AM2) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard - £61.09 inc VAT
Corsair 2GB DDR2 XMS2-6400C4 TwinX (2x1GB) - £39.94
Samsung SpinPoint T 500GB SATA-II 16MB Cache - £62.26
Asus Triton 70 CPU Cooler (Socket 754/939/940/AM2/LGA775) - £19.96
OCZ StealthXStream 600w Silent SLI Ready ATX2 Power Supply - £52.86
OcUK ATI Radeon X1950 Pro 256MB GDDR3 HDTV/DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail - £75.19

I'm tempted to change the AMD for those nice clocking E2140 but do they all clock well? and if I did, whats the best mobo to go for? Although I feel my massive overclocking days are over, I tend to just use it than tweak it.

Do I really need such a decent PSU? any cheaper suggestions?

Which cooler would you recommend?

Any suggestions, or comments welcome.
Thanks

The E21xx line all clock like mad. The Asus P5K or a gigabyte GA P35C DS3R would be fine choices. With the X1950 Pro I'd say all you really need is the Corsair VX 450.

The cooler depends on your case. If space and budget are tight, have a look at the Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro. If you've more room in both you could look at the Scythe Ninja, Thermalright 120 or Ultra, or the every popular Tuniq Tower (which is massively overprices ATM).

How's this?:

Thanks, I'll keep it in mind. I'm still in two minds over Intel or AMD, it is an xmas present so isnt a huge issue, if I was buying it myself it would be Intel in a second because I'm tight :)

Clock for clock is there much difference between the 2 CPU's ?

I think I'll probably just stick to the tried and tested for the time being. I'm swaying towards the AMD. No issues with the mobo in my original post? any better suggestions?

Dunno exactly, but I don't really want to be spending £100-120 on a mobo, I'm happy to spend about £80 on one but naturally want all the overclocking options.

TBH Intel C2D is the better/wiser choice at the moment :) Even the E4500 will keep up with the 6400+ & even beat it if OC'd :(

Although, if you can wait then see how things pan out price-wise with the new AMD line-up, i.e. processors, mobos, etc.
