ISP thread.

Im moving form Brighton to Bristol in a couple of weeks, and am looking to getting my internet sorted for when I move in if possible. Because for some reason cable companies seem to treat the majority of Brighton like wasteland, I've never been able to get cable. Its always been ADSL (Bulldog, and currently Virgin Media in the house im in now). However, in my new house I am able to get pretty much whatever I want. I am moving in with one other person, both of us are fairly heavy downloaders.

After doing some research, I have narrowed it down to two options - Which would be best between Virgin Media 50MB Cable, or Be Pro (24MB) ADSL, or is there something else I have missed?

I have heard many bad things about Virgin, and the connection I am on currently is terrible.. But I think most of those criticisms are about ther ADSL service.

Any sort of advice/feedback is welcome, cheers.

Be Pro (24MB) ADSL, Virgin cap your speeds to hell when you download like 10mb !! lol
just make sure you get a kick ass ADSL2 modem and all will be fine.

I'd check your distance from exchange to your new house first, as that could determine what speeds you'll get on ADSL, As for 50mb cable there is currently no capping/throttling on it, no idea if it is planned to come at a later date though.

Personally I had a good experience with Telewest/Blueyonder no problems whatsoever, but once they changed the name to Virgin it went to complete rubbish, since moved to Sky Max LLU & couldn't be more happier.

Not if he's on 50Mb.

My tuppence, I've been with VM about 5 years or so now, During my time with them I think I've had about 2/3 hours of downtime.

Their UK based guys are great on the phone, I've never used the tech help newsgroups tho which are apparantly very good too.

I pretty much get my max constantly, I've only noticed the STM kicking in a few times and were talking DLing for days on end before I noticed it. My line caps out @ 2.2-2.4MB/s when I need it to.

Don't go with Virgin ADSL however thaeres been some terrible feedbacks on it lol, stick with Cable is my vote ;)

Thanks for your replies guys.. Is there any way I can check the distance from a postcode to the closest exchange?

Also, Im a bit weary of ADSL - I have never, ever, got the speeds out of the line that I am supposed to for whatever reason.
