If you've got an AMD 64 CPU (3500+ in my case) then are you supposed to buy the 64-bit version of Windows Vista?

Or would it be safer sticking with the 32-bit version considering my CPU is a few years old now?

Many thanks,

Tom

Your CPU will be fine with both types of Vista. Have a look around the other Vista threads and see if you should get 64 bit or not.

If your looking for immediate compatability then i'd got for 32bit.

I'm certainly not prepared to endure the stress of it all not working.

I won't be missing out on much if I opt for 32 bit will I?

Waste of money going for 32 bit imo, since everything will be going that way soon enough. I have had no issues so far because I went for 64 bit in stead of 32

64 bit should be fine.

I have a friend who runs almost everything he did before without any problems whatsoever. I'd go for 64 bit most definitely, especially as there'll only be an increasing number of 64 bit applications and games coming out (With the inevitable total disontinuation of 32 bit CPU's).

this is a question you can really only answer yourself. you need to investigate all the essential software you use to see if it works or if there are alternatives available. also you need to check out your hardware and see if decent drivers are available. it's not really a question that can be answered yes/no by asking other people on a forum. :)

I run an Athlon 64 3400+ and 32 bit Vista. I have to admit that going the 64 bit route never crossed my mind. Mind you I do only have 1 gig of RAM...

if you can afford it buy a retail copy of Vista so you can install 32bit now and 64bit later if need to.

I say get 32bit, ppl make it out like 32bit is getting pushed out, i dont think so, i think it will be with us for few more years

I'd suggest waiting a few months at least and then getting the 64bit version then. The OS may be decent, but the drivers aren't at the moment.

Then again, the drivers for the 32-bit version aren't anything to shout about either.

You have nothing to lose mate, the only real reason not to go 64-bit is if your CPU doesn't support it, which yours does.

I didn't realise there were application issues!

I do a lot of video editing using Sony Vegas 6 and it would be an absolute disaster if that stopped working. I'll Google it now to see if there are any issues.

Avoid total disaster and run vista on a dual boot on a separate partition with a fully working xp on the other.

It's an OS though.

They can make it look cooler and do more cool stuff, but it's hardly going to turn my PC from a Polo to a Porsche, is it?

Vista is to XP as XP is to 2000.

i.e. it's a natural progression, there are many more useful features and there'll be a lot better software support for it in the coming years.

Would you ask the same question about upgrading from 2000 to XP?

what IS the difference between 2000 and XP? I always thought XP just had a nicer look to it, I never used 2000 though, just went straight from 98SE to XP.
