Sorry need to rant, had two BY modems swapped out today AND still need another!
Long story short.........
My faithful old Surfboard was giving up the ghost (arcing from power-plug due to dry joint)
Good excuse to get a new small black surfboard I thought to go with the PC! lol
4 day wait for techy (expected, Xmas and all).
Turns up, swaps it out for this tiny black Toys R Us looking "Webstar" modem...........
All works ok though and downloads are at about 1mbs as they should be (I'm on 10mb)
2 minutes after engineer gone I move the modem slightly, "A Network Cable Is Unplugged" comes up on screen.......
No amount of re seating the cable helps and I try a second cable with same effect (I am using an ethernet cable, not USB).
So, basically this cheapo modem has a dodgy LAN connector as when I hold the cable down at the socket it regains connection....remove pressure and fault reappears.
No worries, a little call to BY tech support will sort this I thought
Get through to an Indian call center............ah ****.
Spend over 40 minutes trying to tell this idiot that its nothing to do with IP addresses and that no, I haven't fitted the ethernet lead into the USB connector on the modem!!
Eventually lose patience and politely ask to talk to his supervisor. A British voice appears on the phone and it is arranged for an engineer to come back out in an hour or so.
Same engineer knocks on door, fits another (different model) WebStar modem and all is good.
Off he goes and I'm a happy bunny, though I asked for a Surfboard modem to be fitted if he had one but he didn't.
Try some leeching off Usenet. Find speeds literally capped at 480kbs.......
Not up and down speeds like you get on occasion, literally capped!
Call tech support, Indian voice answers, I hang up......sorry life is too short.
Second try a Scottish voice answers! Phew!
After a few tests it turns out this modem is not compatible with 10mb connections!
So now have to wait till Monday for engineer to come out AND SWAP MODEM AGAIN!! lol
Rant over and I feel better.
Have to say that I have never had trouble with BY before though( been with them since they first offered B/Band) so its not all bad.
