Same as before, it's just the services on the xeon box had stopped running for a few weeks hence why my production had disappeared basically! Furthermore my pc at home was off for 20 days as I was away on holiday - didn't feel the need to clock up uncessary bills - I also turn off my pc at night

It's now back up and crunching hard!

I get my student loan through in a few weeks time, so I might put that to good use - ie towards a small file server for my house. It will have some sort of Skt 939 AMD 64, possibly an X2 if I can find one lol.

Unless one of you lot can recommend something else for the extremely small budget that clocks well. 300 quid of the loan has already been booked to fill the dent in my account that my new Dell 2007WFP caused

How complete does it need to be? Everything from case, PSU, RAM, mobo, etc, or does it just need to be barebones?

Needs everything really. Except monitor and other peripherals. Once its on the network I can VNC into it so peripherals wont be needed.

EDIT: Case doesn't have to be special and smaller the better - be nice to fit a couple of HDDs tho. Don't worry too much about this though as I can have a nosey for one myself if I don't like your suggestions

I bet your best bet is snagging a used rig on the MM. Blokes in there are selling high-spec 939 rigs in lieu of Conroe.

Everyone in the house has music, films and photographs they all access from different machines and currently its all on my main rig. I don't mind it being there but I do far too much tinkering and I could lose it all and/or deprive others when my machine isnt on.

Be nice to have a central location for all the files etc and it would be a good place to send backups from the other machines also.

Well you certainly don't need a high-end rig for those tasks so consider FAH the most stressful thing it'll do. You could probably get into an E6300 for about 450.

Beyond that a used rig is the best. An X2 3800+ would crunch like mad.

I don't want to buy a conroe unless I have plenty to spend on an awesome rig - can't not have the best CPU in my main rig

So I will probably go for an AMD. I would prefer a new rig, then I know any errors/faults/etc can be sorted should they occur.
