Sort me a shuttle! Please :)

Hi,

I'm building myself a shuttle, but have never tried it before and have a few issues.

I like the look of the SK22G2, but according to the OcUK site it only comes with a 200W PSU (though other sites claim 240). How am I supposed to run a decent system off 200W?! It'll have, say a 4200CPU and a 7900 graphics card, with a HD and optical drive! Sound card too, eventually.

Can anyone spec me anything? Please?
I have a £600 budget, and no parts so far. The budget is to include the cost of Vista (probably home basic for now).

I'll use it to watch DVDs, play a few games, and listen to some music.
Should be quiet, too!

Thanks for any help!

240watts is more than enough to run all that :) hell 200watt is tbh. shuttle psu's are v.high quality so dont worry about power. check the thread below this, people are running x1950pro's and all manor of cpu's etc off these psu's fine

as for the speccing part im not so great at. but if you can get all the bits you suggested for £600 then that looks like quite an awesome spec

If I up my budget to £900, am I going to do better than this?

No case there, id throw it all in a sugo :D

*swapped 64 bit windows for 32bit as theres no drivers and a lot of apps/games dont work on 64bit :)*

most hardware drivers are part of vista, and also most programs work on it, 32bit or not :)

if your thinkin about gettin 32bit vista then id say dont bother adn stick to normal xp. its more stable than its ever been at the moment, it actually works :) and drivers adn programs are pretty much guaranteed to work. if you want vista then id stick ot the 64bit version.

but that spec would be very tasty in a sugo :)

A Sugo is a bit big, I'm afraid.

I really want something as small as possible - i.e. Shuttle sized.

Thanks for the ideas though! Any other specs?

OK, free cookie if anyone can beat this spec for me, staying within the criteria below.

Shuttle XPC SN27P2 AM2 Barebone System £303.93
AMD AM2 Athlon64 X2 5000+ Dual Core OEM £185.93
Sapphire ATI Radeon X1950 Pro 512MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail £152.74
2 x 1Gb sticks PC5300 Patriot Signature Line RAM £125.00
Sony AW-G170AB2 18x DVD±RW x12 Ram Dual Layer DVD-Writer - (Black) OEM £19.96

SHIPPING £18.00

TOTAL: £787.56

Bear in mind:

  • Must be Shuttle-sized
  • Must have a PCI slot
  • Must be a single slot graphics card.
  • That RAM is final, already got it ordered, and I have everything not on the list.
  • £800 limit.

Cheers!

Those chassis only have a 250w PSU though - is that OK for the X1950 Pro 512MB with a Conroe and the rest?

And they only have 2 RAM slots, so harder to upgrade there.

Only 1 hard drive slot, too.

Any idea of the sound quality on a SN37P2?

I'm thinking, if it's good enough, I won't have to bother with a sound card, could get an external TV card, and then get away with not having the PCI slot.

The sound quality is actually pretty good. The only thing they really miss is the EAX support. The envy24 is similar quality to philips m-audio and all the other cards that gave creatives a fair spanking for sound quality but fell behind tech wise :)

Id say even the stock 200watt psu's (the achme ones) would power that lot. believe me when i say, these psu's put their bigger ATX cousins to shame sometimes

check out this http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17663358

also i think 2 ram slots is fine. seein as you can buy dual channel packs etc, honestly cant see you needing anymore than 2gig for general stuff

FINAL SPEC!!!

Shuttle SD37P2
Core 2 Duo 6600
Sapphire x1950Pro 512Mb
2Gb PC5300 Patriot Signature Line RAM
Sony AW-G170AB2 18x DVD±RW OEM

Going to order it in the morning.

Anyone care to throw a last challenge at that?

I really liked the look of the Shuttle's but they only one that will take a C2D. Big disadvantage with that is that it only has 2 PCI-e slots. I wanted a standard PCI as well, in order to fit a soundblaster card.

I ended up going for the Apevia X-Qpack case, which is only slightly bigger than the Shuttle (and also has a 420W power supply as standard), and ASUS P5B-VM mobo, with E6600. As its m-ATX, the board has 1 PCI-e X16 slot, 1 PCI-e X4, and 2 PCI slots, and 4 memory slots if you wish to add more later.

You can write off one of the PCI slots if you are using a double sized GFX card.

Just a thought....

Oops. .apologies. You are right about the SD32G* models. I wrote them off as not being good enough as I wanted an 865/875 chipset. Sorry for clouding the issue.

ah yeah, thats the only thing their really missing is a decent chipset, but having said that, with the power of c2d i dont think you'd really notice too much difference, though overclocking would be even more of a problem
