Hi there, my pc is dying as we speak so I am looking to upgrade, at the moment my specs are

Case - antec 900 - in good order unless cheap one on offer?

Processor - Intel Core 2 Quad 2.66 GHz Processor - Sort of dead!

Mobo - Some MSI one - Needs replacing

RAM - 4GB kingston - Will do unless I upgrade to new i processors

Graphics - ATI radeon 4890 i think - Its good, think i got the model right but it is good enough

PSU - Corsair 550W - Good unless i need more power

HDD - 500GB Western - Good

So need to replace my Processor and MOBO desperatly and RAM if i need to and case or PSU if i need to

My budget can vary 250 if i can upgrade to i processor would be good but see what i can do...

Any help would be good!!

Thanks 98p

The Q8400 is still a powerful processor. If you want to stay LGA 775, then your next cpu upgrade option is either 9550 or 9650 which isn't worth it as you won't see much performance difference.
I don't think your cpu is dead. When you say cpu cooler isn't working, do you mean that fan isn't turning on?

well my pc isnt working at the moment, wont stay on longer than 15minutes before it switches off and got no OS on it at the moment, not the master of reformatting and it will turn off 15 minutes into reformatting so... think i need to start from scratch

What cpu cooler do you have? Also you may need to reset the Cmos.

sorry to sound like an idiot, but im not sure, but im not really looking to keep my processor, i would like to upgrade my processor and mobo and ram, but just looking for the best components for my money...

I appreciate your help but i think im a bit out of my depth.

yeah the fan doesnt work and a core is boiling hot!

I got a new cooler, but the fan doesnt fit onto it, a coolermaster one, i know it sounds silly but the fixtures they gave me do not correspond to the mounting on the cpu cooler.

First you say that fan isn't working then you are saying that the fan doesn't fit onto the cooler:confused:. Can you please clarify what cooler it is and secondly what fan it is you are trying to attach:).

The i3 bundle although is a good value; but you will be going back to dual core from quad core.. The quadcore is the future now.

If you had Thermal Throttling active in the bios its unlikely the cpu is borked. I suspect the mobo isn't borked either. Just try a new hsf first. The reason your PC seems dead/carp/unstable at the moment is that it keeps throttling or shutting down to protect itself.

if i take pics will it help, sorry i rushed my answer, my original cooler the fan wasnt working so i bought a coolermaster cooler to change and the fan that came with it wont fit onto the actual cooler!

Pics in next post.

But is i3 not a worthy upgrade...?

Thanks I took it apart and put it all together again about 3 months ago but seems to have gone back to its rusty ways.

Sorry i dont understand the terms you are using, i know im on an overclocking forum but im not an avid user so maybe is there a simple way of putting it?

Sorry to ill inform you, this is the processor i have

Core 2 Quad Q6600 – 2.40 GHz (2×4 MB L2 Cache, 1066 MHz FSB) (January 7, 2007)
