Sorting out Photo Collection

Hi,

I have about 8 Gig's of photos that I really need to sort out, at the moment they are just in a real mess and scattered around my machine, can anybody recommend any good software that will help me sort my life out!

What do you mean by sort out? Would Picasa fit the bill?

I do it manually, I don't like the idea of having a piece of software control where the photos are or how they're sorted.

All my photos sit on the e:\camera path like this:

e:\camera
->year (of shot)
-->DVD## (so I know which disk if I need to retrieve a backup)
--->subject (per event or shot type, may be sub dirs under this)
---->RAW (all the .CRW & .CR2 files)
----->Converted (final converted and edited copies in .TIF format)

Well I have duplicates on many drives, I need to sort it all out into one definitive collection.
