I have fitted CPU, heatsink, graphics, ram and all drives into the computer, wired everything up, but of course there could be some mistakes there.

RAM is definately in the slots properly and so is GPU and CPU

I have definately fitted the mobo power connectors, both 24 and 8 pin,

One question though, how does the PSU know not to turn on if there is a problem?

Also a little obervation: There first time I plugged it in and switched on the back CPU switch the top fan switched abit.

The way you're assembling your pc, I wouldn't be surprised if you end up RMA'ing all of them.

Seriously I was real careful and the only reason you say that was because of the hammering issue which actually worked and had nothing to do with any electrical components.

The hammering didn't get rid of the bend it just made it every so slightly less bent so that it didn't require THAT much force to pull down the securing lever for the CPU.

Also I did take out the CPU a couple of times to make sure it was in the right way and everything (twice). How fragile are those pins? Nothing looked bent or broken in anyway on the CPU or the mobo socket.

Again I am really thinking (and hoping) this could be a wiring problem or something. Apart from the top fan twitching for 1 second there is no sign AT ALL of the presence of power in the system. I have also tried switching on the mobo with the onboard switch that it has but that doesn't work either.

Obvious checks first: did you try clearing your CMOS? Switch PSU on and off? unplug kettle lead?

Did you also connect the PCI-E 6 pin power to the graphics card?

Check to make sure nothing on the mobo is shorted, and all mounting screws on mobo tray align with screw holes on the mobo.

Best way would be process of elimination.
Easiest thing first, reset the CMOS.
Unplug ALL power connectors / SATA / IDE etc, all 'extras' such as sound cards, and just connect power to the motherboard with CPU (+cooler), ram and VGA.
Keep adding bits one at a time until it fails. Theres your dodgy component.

If it does not power up with just the basics, remove the ram and video card, leaving just PSU + Motherboard + CPU. Make sure the system speaker is connected and turn the PC on, you should hear a series of beeps.
If even this fails, something is either faulty, not connected properly or there is a short somewhere. Try removing the mobo from the case and double-check there are no rogue screws or anything trapped underneath.

Good luck. Keep the hammer away! ;)

OK guys NEWS:

Just took away all extras as you said, and refitted the essentials to ensure proper connection....dunnow which connection was faulty but....IT TURNED ON LOL. Damn the fan is soooo loud but I am so happy you guys!!!!

I want to really thank you guys for the support and attention you gave to me, I will try and repay you somehow, maybe I can help you in the future :D If you need hammer skills call me up I will send my dad over lol

But anyway the diagnostic LED shows a ton of symbols probably because it cant find any harddrives etc (all disconnected) but I will start connecting those ups.

When it's all finished I will send some pics too, of the finished thing and of the goings on last night lol.

Anyway thank you all again!!!!!!!!!!!!

(P.S this might not be over I might need more help :D)

Get two boxes.

In one put your small screwdriver, your anti static lead, your pliers. This is you PC tool box.

In the second put a saw, a monkey wrench, that hammer. This is you round the house tool box.

Don't use the PC tool box on your plumbing, don't use your round the house box on your PC! Ever!

Glad you got it working, and at least you kept your sense of humour. :D

Those Quad-cores are tough, they can take quite a hammering! (Literally)

lol sorry but that is just quality, 10 points to your dad for owning components with a hammer

nope I'm in tears Lmao

"DAD the graphics cards wont go in"
"its ok son leave it to me"

I just couldn't help but lol, am in work just now and my colleagues think i'm mad, lol!

Good luck with the build though, and don't get too put off, it all comes with experience. On my first build as a computer techie (at the tender age of 15 - christ, 11 years ago now! Jeez!), I was working in a computer shop, removed a client's motherboard to replace it... seated the new motherboard, connected everything up, and boom! I had left all the original brass risers in the same place and the new mobo had a different configuration! Thought i'd never recover from that, but 11 years on and the number of computers i've built must be rapidly approaching the 1000 mark by now :)

Mate if I were you i'd just give it to your dad and let him have a bash ;) at putting it together. Quad core when you have no idea for a first build is abit mad imo :D

lol yea I guess

Pic from last night... notice the Zalman lol now thats what I call a tight fit, but its not that bad because the top fan and the zalman fan are working together so when I put my hand above the graphics card I can feel what I can only describe as WIND :D

kudos to you mate for being so optomistic on your first build.

One thing......omg the wires !!!!

you may need to sort them out so you get better airflow/cooling.

Glads it working.

I dont have your cooler but it looks a bit wonky?! I could be wrong tho.

Also you should look into cable management!!!!!!

Glad it's working! :)

Putting it all together is just the beggining mate, tidying up cables and managing airflow is the tough part! Afterwards you will also need BIOS / windows tweaks to really make your system perform at its best.

Take advice from the wise ones and soon it will be your time to wander the earth ;)

mate, you have not installed the zalman correctly, the fan blades on the cpu cooler is best positioned towards the memory blowing towards the rear 120mm fan, if it is still to much of a sqeeze i would remove the fan at the top of the case. if it still wont fit you should think about getting a different cpu cooler. also the fan at the top may be exhausting air rather than feeding it which will disrupt the air flow to the cpu. If you have a look HERE this is how it should be fitted. Hope this helps, you really cannot run it like that.

******* class that with the hammer, i was laughing that much i totally forgot what i was gona say in here. :D :D

Also the Zalman looks wonky as its on the wrong way round.
