Hi all,

New to forum - hope you can advise.

I have a bit of a dilemma...I'm just about to purchase a pre-built system, and I have now have the tricky decision of what OS to purchase it with :D

After many hours of trawling through the net, forums, discussions etc, I guess the natural choice for a new system is to go with the latest OS system - Vista. However, I've heard so many problems with Creative at the mo regarding driver issues with Vista, EAX not working, remote control not working etc. especially with 64bit systems with 4GB RAM :( Now 4GB RAM is an option for me to upgrade too, but much depends on whether I go for Vista or XP.

So the dilemma is - do I go for Vista and just sit and bear all the problems that people are experiencing for the time being or do I go for trusty XP which we know works!

The system in question (OcUK pre-built) is:

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 GO 2.40GHz Quad Core CPU (Overclocked to 3.30GHz +)
Abit IP35-Pro Intel P35 (Socket LGA775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
Crucial 2GB PC2-8500 CAS5 (2x1GB) Dual Channel Kit (Overclocked at 1000MHz+)
NVIDIA 8800 GTX 768MB GDDR3 VIVO HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) DirectX 10 Graphics Card
Creative Labs X-Fi Elite Pro

System to be used for Gaming, Audio, FIlms, mp3 playback and basic applications.

Here's my thoughts:

XP Pro (32 bit)

Positives -

- Would save £££ on additional RAM (2MB sufficient for XP?)
- Compatible with everything
- Less problems than 64 bit Vista is experiencing
- Sound card will function as I want it to!

Negatives -

- Wouldn't be able to run 64 bit apps
- Couldn't take advantage of 4GB RAM (if wanted to)
- Can't experience full effects of DX10

XP Vista (64 bit)

Positives -

- Something new, latest OS from MS
- Could support my DX10 graphics card and therefore can experience full capabilities
- Can support 4GB RAM

Negatives -

- Incompatibility of older programs
- Driver issues with X-fi
- Performance decrease with older 32bit apps / games?

What you guys think?

Some questions for you

1) Does running 32 bit apps and older games in Vista 64bit reduce the performance?
2) If I were to upgrade to 4GB - this will as a result reduce the CPU overclocking down to approx 3.1Ghz for stability, would the extra RAM make up for this loss?
3) Is there any benefit of having 4GB of memeory (albeit only 3GB will be seen) in a 32bit OS? Or is this more of a hinderance?

Any advice/thoughts would be hugely appreciated,

Cheers

1:-No If anything, in my experience 64-bit runs as smooth as a nut.

2:-4GB of RAM should not affect your OC to any great extent. Stability is affected by the limit of the CPU and temps. If you did have to drop then the advantage of 4GB of RAM would make up for such a small drop.

3:- Future-proofing I suppose is the main reason for 4GB. Also why pay for 4GB and only use 3?

PS welcome to the forums

Cheers for the response & the welcome.... ;)

I think if Creative didn't have many issues I'd go and take the plunge and get Vista 64bit with the 4GB RAM. Mind you, saying that, I'm sure a 'stable' driver will be released soon ! *ahem*
