So I finally found out the problem why my PC would not boot... The Creative X-Fi soundcard. Take it out, boots... Put it in at will not even get past BIOS. Even works fine with an old SB Audigy so I'm pretty sure it's the X-Fi.

As it's under warranty I'm hoping to get an RMA. Does anyone have any experience with Creative returns service?

Also if anyone has anything to add on why the computer would not boot rather than just not detect the card itself it would also be interesting.

when you say would not boot, where did it stop? at the boot screen (listing drives/memory etc) or after that? what error message was there if any?

wouldn't go to windows probably because of the drivers/service(s) which are tied to the hardware and for some reason it stopped windows from booting up, that's my take on it. You would think windows would boot up, and it wouldn't be recognised in hardware list, with a yellow mark there on your sound card, listed maybe as unknown device.

Maybe the motherboard is able to protect itself and detected the card had malfunctioned so refused to go any further with it. Maybe it's just something that is unique for the situation to occur.

I assume you tried the audigy in the same slot as the x-fi was in, just to rule out the slot on the mobo being faulty.

Might be worth trying the x-fi in another mobo if possible and see what happens.

how old is the card?
