I wouldn't bother with a Xonar Essence. It's a better card for music than for gaming. While it's perfectly fine for gaming, it's no better than cheaper cards, thus making it a pointless upgrade. Don't really see the point of the Phoebus. Granted it has a headphone amp, but other than that it has no real gains over the D2X. Unless you're itching to spend some cash, I'd stick with the D2X if it's working well for you.

And what were Asus thinking with Phoebus remote design :-S maybe its just me or does it look a little too aggressive for the average desk.

Asus Xonar Essence STX is the best card you can get for music when using headphones.

I am more in to gaming than music, i am looking for something for good positional sound 7.1 simulated for headphones maybe?

What would be the options for me..... I always used a USB (g35-megalodon)

Phoebus does have Dolby Home Theatre v4, rather than Dolby Headphone found on the majority of Xonar cards. No experience of it myself, and there are very few comparisons of the two that I can find. According to Dolby, DHT v4 uses the same algorithms for headphone use as Dolby Headphone. Can't see much point in buying a Phoebus, if positional sound isn't going to be any different compared to the D2X.

Buying a Soundblaster Z would make more sense as it uses Creative's own system rather than Dolby; unless of course, you want to avoid Creative at all costs.
