Sound Card??

Ok im building my first PC on friday and need to order my parts,so my question is do i need a sound card? And what does it do?

What motherboard are you getting? All the soundcard does is drive speakers to make noises. Whether you want a better one than will come on your motherboard is up to you. Some motherboards (DFI) have quite good onboard sound, and sometimes they don't have such good sound built-in.

What do you want to do with your PC? Play games, watch DVDs, listen to music?

Also avoid the realtek HD onboard if you want quality stereo sound through all 4 speakers , it's nothing like the cmss xfi surround sound. Its a distorted mess

Again it depends what you want really , avoid the XFI xtreme audio at all costs if you play games

Im getting The Asus P5Q pro, all i have is a laptop that has inbuilt speakers.Im using it to play games TF2 WOW mainly.

Again it depends what you want really.

Its not really what i want,im not sure if i need one,can you use your speakers through your Mobo?

Im sorry im the biggest noob and the smallest questions atm

If you reckon you want decent quality of sound, a separate soundcard will generally give you that, but it is necessary to get a "decent" one, something like the Asus Xonar DX
