Is there a huge difference in quality over on board sound cards??? Got an asrock extreme 4 gen 3 board and just wonder whether to upgrade my sound... Play bf3 a bit ...

Have a Xonar D1 myself and it's one of the best purchases I have made other than my SSD. As above you need decent speakers but to appreciate the difference.

Depends on the rest of your music set up really....

A decent set of speakers/a pair of normal stereo headphones and you'll see a world of difference.

Try something like Dolby Headphone and you'll be blown away (headphone surround wise).

I got my Xonar D2, second hand for about £40. Absolutely incredible what it does for my gaming.

FPS', I hear bullets whistle past my ears, Skyrim, I honestly was completely freaked out by a ghost noise, and Racing games - oh god the roar of those engines!

There is a big difference. Sound is more alive with a sound card as I always found the sound quite limp and lifeless with onboard (tried a few onboards).

I even preferred a very old Audigy 2 card over my then brand new Realtek onboard sound despite it's tendency to pop and crackle at times. I was using a 5.1 headset and I could even tell the difference with them, and they weren't that good.

Don't have speakers set up at the moment.. I use by fatality headset when I'm playing battlefield 3 and eve.. The front speaker cable for my case is a bugger cos it's not that long ands has to fit on the furthest point on the motherboard...

For £20 I can't complain.. I'll order it today n see what the difference is like..

I had issues with certain games using the onboard sound on my board in sig. Purchased an asus xonar DX audio card and havent looked back. Very impressed with it, particularly for games and blu ray, sounds fantastic through my ns1000 headphones. I dont bother with front panel audio, just use a long extension cable to switch between headphones or speakers.

Gone from a Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme card on my old PC (which i had for over 3 years) to onboard sound on my new Intel i7 PC and can't tell any difference what so ever.

Using an amp and decent speakers which were originally from a hifi stereo. PC is used for listening to music, gaming and films.

Selling my card on a well known auction website.

I actually have one of the Xonar DG cards myself.
WOW is what i'll say.
I had to buy one as my original mobo didnt like audio (dont ask) so bought this as it has a headphone amp built in and was cheap.
Makes my speakers sound awesome and a cheap set of sennheiser hd201's sound like they should cost £100 more.
