sound guru's help please.

I'm trying to find a surround sound and blu ray player bundle for my dad for christmas.
The only problem is i don't really know whats "good" and whats "rubbish"

Its going with a full HD TV which will have optical out

The budget is £500 MAX but any lower would be great.

You're looking at cheapo TVs and BR players then...not sure if you'll get surround sound with that budget.

Edit: Agh forgot the bluray! Bit stumped then. Perhaps a nice bundle from richers would be worth a look at. Onkyo 507 + Whatever the current Onkyo speaker package with non floorstanders is +Cheap Bluray might be doable for £500 with some haggling .

I dont think any TV's output via HDMI, he will have to use optical to get the sound from the TV to the amp.

Screw optical from the TV. Take it direct from the source (in this instance a Blu Ray player)
