As per thread title, for the last couple of months i've had no sound in windows apps. Youtube, windows theme sounds, nothing. BUT media player classic and WMP are fine.

If i go into the windows theme sounds tester, the play button is greyed out.

I know the sound is working as movies are fine and the nvidia speaker test runs fine.

I've tried reinstalling chipset and sound driver but nothing is changing.

Mobo is SN85G4.

Cheers

Done a full driver clean, rebooted, driver install, everything is fine. Apart from i've got no sound in windows.

Sound in Media Player Classic, yes.
Sound in Windows Media Player, yes.
Sound in the Nvidia speaker setup wizard, yes.
Sound from Microsoft SAM test page, yes.
Sound from browsers, flash videos, windows sound properties page, no. :(

I can watch a silent video on youtube, then pull the temp file out of the cache, play it in MPC and it's got sound.

Any ideas?

Analog or digital? (I've had the same system, literally just upgraded it)

Do you have ffdshow/AC3filter etc installed? It could be possible it's using this for stuff from MPC, but obviously not Windows?

Analog stuff.

I do have ffdshow and ac3 stuff installed, they're next on the list.

Went to get new drivers from the Nvidia site and my system is listed as legacy! Worrying progress when 2 gig 64bit machines are thought of as legacy

all codec uninstalled, can't play movies now. SAM still talks, but i've still got no windows sounds.

Reloaded codecs and it told me that "something" was busted in my audio setup, do i want it fixed? Yes please!

All fine again now.

Bloody odd.
