Sound input on to laptop

Hi all,

My friend has a laptop and is looking to record from his decks to MP3. Can anyone recommend the best way to do this? Would any external hardware be required? What about software, what is the best around?

In the past i've just plugged my mixer into the line in on my sound card, and saved as .Wav then converted .Wav to .Mp3.
There may be easier ways, but at the time the above was easiest
