Ok, here's the issue, I'm pretty sure it's a setting somehwere but can't find where.

On a laptop, there is a Realtek HD audio chipset which is all up to date on drivers. When on speakers or on headphones, when there is a high bass output the mid range volume dips, giving a rather weird effect. The headphones work fine on other machines, so it's not that.

Any ideas?

- Right click the speaker icon in the tray.
- Choose Playback devices.
- Double click the connection you're using. Probably named Speakers or Headphone. It may be non-greyed out and have a green tick over the icon. Just make sure you select the one you're using.
- Goto the Enhancements tab. Untick everything.

Additionally you should try:
- Right click the speaker icon in the tray.
- Choose Recording devices.
- Select Communications tab.
- Choose Do Nothing.

This is for Windows 7. Vista is similar.
