Sound issue

hi all
hoping you can shed some light on this
I have just starting using a TV instead of a monitor- connected to the PC via HDMI
into an NVidia 1060 card
I also use an ASUS soundcard
the issue is some videos and music only play through the TV via the HDMI and some videos/music
only play through the PC speakers (plugged into the soundcard)
also I think it varies dependent on what player I use e.g. media player, iTunes or groove music
any thoughts ?

thanks all- was kinda thinking in these directions but definitely wanted some opinions before I start chucking money at something else
