Sound Issues - Seems like Software

Hi folks,

I have been having some sound issues lately while playing certain games / doing certain things, for example:

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 Multiplayer = No sound in game, however I get menu sounds

Borderlands - Sound in the menu, nothing whatsoever in game

WoW + Ventrilo - All audio cuts off again

When my sound cuts off in a game, I can close the game and still remain soundless, so in order to "fix" it I have to reboot the PC.

I am using the Realtek HD Audio onboard sound on my MSI P55-GD65 Intel 55 Motherboard.

It's safe to assume that it's not the onboard sound chip that is faulty as I can happily listen to music and play other games with crisp clear sound, just not on the list above...

All my drivers are up to date (I should bloody hope so!) as I downloaded/installed the newest drivers last week some time.

So before I take a hammer to my MSI and buy the Asus motherboard, can anyone offer a solution to my problem?

Thanks in advance,

-Mikchi

my first guess would be something in the sound settings, I assume that menu sounds may just be stereo whilst game sounds are surround, might be worth setting your speaker configuration in the audio options in your OS to stereo and see if you get stereo sound in games, might be a good place to start. Also, I recall in my bios there is a setting for turning HD sound on or off, might be worth checking the setting. What speaker set up do you have?

Oops, didn't think to write that in :(

In the sound settings in Control Panel I have set the sound to Stereo and 5.1 Surround Sound and tried both on Borderlands with no luck.

The speaker set I have is the Logitech X-530 5.1.

I'll have a look in the BIOS to see if I can turn the HD audio off.

Thanks for replying,

Hmm...

My case only has a HD audio port on the front, so if I tell it to use AC97 what would happen?

Also what would happen with my HD audio drivers?
