Sound keeps cutting out

I don't record for anything other than personal use and the card I've got has been fine until recently. The ASIO doesn't work at all though so I gave up and just ended up using an analogue signal from my POD X3 to the microphone input.

yeah, well *something* must have changed....if getting a new sound card is a no-no maybe a windows re-install will do the trick. Difficult choices whichever direction you choose...

ok well i've plugged my speakers into the onboard for now to see if the problem is still there before buying a new card. if the problem persists its clearly an install issue.

Have you tried the PAX drivers? That's kinda really your last roll of the dice...
