Sound Not Working

Im trying to help a friend he has the http://www.pcservicecall.co.uk/layout.aspx?ID={84bc8068-d5fc-4600-9e3b-b4650a3d9e31}&CatID={bd91e144-dbcb-41cc-aa77-705ab359c570}

the sound has suddenly started to output a mild whiny noise and you cant hear any of the sound it plays not a bit at all. I have checked volumes, updated drivers c-media and realtek. can anyone help?

has he tried the speakers in another systme to rule ut faulty speakers ?? or plug some headphones to see if its still winey through them

if its a seperate sound card could be worth taking it out and reseating it. worth trying *** basics first.

In Volume Control have you definitely put "Master" and "Wave/MP3" up to max?

Is it definately enabled in the bios?....

Does it show up correctly via the device manager?....

Try a cheap sound card?

there isnt another sound card to use, i just want to rule this out first. It is enabled in bios and volume is correct.

i assume there is a central chip that runs on board sound maybe its gone for it. you could try an complete reinstall of everything but that is obviously the final step bar replacemnet.

any idea how much a cheap sound card will cost? and will it work as in the onboard sound has died?

You can get a cheapo from a number of places, for less them £20, but i'd break the rules to say any more then that, not prepared to do so, sorry.

However, if the board functions enough to work, minus the sound, a sound card has a good chance of working.

So it will work if i get another sound card, it needs to be lowprofile as the advent is a small pc (follow link in first post), any suggestions?

No guarantees, but as i said before, it has a good chance of working, and as i also said before i can't point you at anywhere other then OC'ers because that would be against forum rules.
