Sound not working

I have an ASUS KV8-X SE motherboard but there is no sound coming from the speakers. I tried a USB Sound adaptor and it works but for some reason can't get the on-board sound to work.

Any ideas?

most motherboards these days need the front audio-headers to be plugged in before the rear audio jacks will output sound

Not in my experience they don't.

Could be faulty hardware. Is it enabled in BIOS?

Check its not disabled in bios
Get the latest sound card drivers for the asus site

Under peripherals or hardware, something like that.

wierd. in the past 7 PC's that i've built, none of them would output sound through the rear jacks untill the front ones were either plugged in or disabled with jumpers, but because all cases come with the front sockets these days, the mobo-manuals don't detail where to put the drivers.
