Hi all,

I've got an old machine that I've cobbled together and I've got Ubuntu installed on it.
The problem I'm having is that the sound isn't working. Is there a way to uninstall the sound card (onboard) so that it re-installs or asks me which driver to install?

I'm tempted to buy a pci sound card and disable the onboard but I thought I'd ask if there was a simple fix before I go onto ebay.

Thanks
Des

ps. I'm a total newbie to Ubuntu so any tips will be greatly appreciated. No matter how simple you think they are.

I'm not much of an ubuntu freak just so you know but do you know what chipset you're running? It's gotta be hella obscure if ubuntu cant pick it up, ubuntu runs alsa/pulse right?

lspci output might be handy

lol. Speak English :)

It's an old Foxconn mobo. Some kind of P4 755(?) chipset.
I'll probably just install xp onto it to check that the sound is actually working.

Was just hoping for a quick fix.

No, its not uncommon for someone to have this issue with Ubuntu or one of its derivatives.

I'm sure there used to be a lot of Foxconn issues due to a bios bug, it might be worth going to the Foxconn site and downloading an update for your bios just to see if that works as a quick fox.

Thanks for that. I'll give it a bash.

I couldn't see an IEC 958 but the only thing that had capture under it was Mic. I muted that.

Alsamixer identifies it as:-

Card: SiS SI7012
Chip: Realtek ALC655 Rev 1

I'm still looking for a BIOS Update. I have found one but I have no idea where my USB floppy drive is.
