Sound options for my new TV

I ordered a Samsung UE55KS7000, 55 inch TV, which will arrive on Friday afternoon.
Now I need to think about sound options as I'm currently using my old amp and speakers from my student days, connected to the audio output from the TV. I'm not sure I have that option with the new TV.

I have a budget of around £600, and was looking at a soundbar or 2.1 speakers rather than a 5.1 setup.

Can you give some recommendations. Would two seperate speakers be better than a soundbar setup?

I guess I would need a new amp as well?

£600 will get you a nice stereo setup. Getting a subwoofer in that budget maybe pushing it though.

Since this is a AV setup, even though you will be using 2 speakers, I'd get a AVR and is it in 2 channel mode, as it has HDMI, audio formats to decode movies etc. Rather than a stereo amplifier.

Something like a Yamaha 6xx series AVR, with £250 speakers will be suitable, and offer better sound than a soundbar (and have more connecitivity options, plus if you want to upgrade, replace or add parts you can do so) But with a soundbar you can't do anything.

no need for a yamaha 6 series amplifier if only using 2 speakers or 2.1 then all he needs is a 5.1 amplifier. also old 6 series amplifiers don't support 4k.

"Now with full HDCP2.2 compatibility
The latest RXV381 now has HDCP2.2 compatibility through all of its four HDMI inputs. Along with support for HDR and BT.2020, this means the RXV381 is fully equipped for handling the latest UHD Blu-ray players and HDR-equipped 4K TVs."

this only comes on the latest AVR's

go for a 3 series (this is something you can always upgrade later on) and is the easiest thing to upgrade within a system.

i would also forget a subwoofer for now and buy some half decent floorstanders

then get some of this

make sure it's 2.5mm, 4mm is overkill and will produce the same sound

it's best to pump the money into speakers as it's easier and sometimes vital to upgrade avr's with time as new features come out. however speakers don't tend to have any improvements at all the tech has been the same for over 30 years.

i know what i have suggested is over budget by about £200 which is why you really need to think about the second hand market, avforums and there is even a full setup in the members market at the moment. i managed to pick up around £2-£3K worth of gear for less than £1K going second hand to start with. I recently just bought a brand new amp however as it has features second hand models don't

Thank you both. I think I have a good option to get an AVR this week with some new copper wire, and use my current two Mission speakers. This will just be changing the Amp from my old one.

I can look for additional speakers after that which will go better with my wife. :-)
