Hi all,

I've just picked up a DFI X48 T2RS motherboard which is outputting sound via HDMI but not via the jacks. Could this be a driver issue? I just let windows install its default drivers, but it's only showing the audio via monitor. DFI have disappeared making drivers hard to come by.

Cheers

front case or rear jacks?

what os? if win7/8 it should find/install needed drivers inc audio for you

Never mind - audio was disabled in the BIOS. I didn't know you could get audio over HDMI without the motherboard's sound processor being enabled. So when you run it from HDMI, is it actually the graphics card that's powering the sound?

I just assumed the graphics card was routing audio data from the motherboard to the TV/monitor. I guess not then. Do gfx cards these days have a dedicated audio processor on them or just use some of their processing horsepower to do it?

The mixing is done in software in Windows and it's just a completely digital PCM output through HDMI to the TV. In old (GeForce 8 series) cards those pins were controlled through a pass through from the onboard audio. The hard part with audio is the digital to analog conversion, it's much less of an issue if it's still digital like with HDMI.
