Sound plate question - Ok to put on shelf/recess under TV?

Possibly a stupid question... Possibly not?

I'm looking to get a Maxell MXSB-252 sound plate for our bedroom TV. However, ideally I'd prefer asthetically not to have that huge blob of black under the TV easily visible etc.

Now the TV is sitting on a fitted set of drawers BUT, there is a built in 12cm shelf/opening immediately under that top surface (where the TV is), above the drawers... I had it made that way so we could put media devices etc in there to keep it tidy.

So, would it be seriously compromising the soundplate putting it in that recess/shelf, instead of up above actually directly under the TV?

I understand the plates are meant to sit under the TV, but I believe the speakers are at the front, just like a soundbar, so I can't see how putting it in that 12cm high recess would compromise it?

I'm hoping someone out there with a soundplate, or experience can comment?

Thanks!

The 252's woofer speaker has a cone at the back and also has an output on the underside (from what I remember) Whether that will compromise or enhance is unclear to me. The front facing speakers shouldn't be affected too much.
