Sound problem with iBook

I have an iBook G4 and it seems to have developed a fault recently. Its only playing sound out of the left internal speaker. At first I thought this was a hardware problem i.e. the Right speaker. However when I plugin headphones or external speakers I still only get sound via the left channel.

Is this a hardware problem or a software config problem

Hello mate, go to System Preferences > Sound > Output (along the top) and check the balance. If its all the way to the left then it will explain your problem. If not, it may be a hardware fault.

My ibook has long had this problem it will fade off to one side for no apparent reason. If you find yours does try this application to keep the levels 50/50...

Mine also does this periodically. My guess is that a certain app or util I've got running changes it for some reason, perhaps VLC or like.
